Dear All,
We operate steam turbine 55MW in base load condition. Rotor weight is around 32000 kg. The jacking oil pump discharge is 130 psig and the line has PRV at 150 psig.
There is a question from our operation team, is it allowed to conduct online running testing of jacking oil pump?

Best Regards;
Rky

Can you expand a bit on what "online running testing of jacking oil pump" actually entails??

At first glance, your discharge pressure and PRV setting are quite close. If the PRV is a simple Sp1ring type, undertolerance is -10% so you don't have a lot to play with there.

what exactly is a "jacking oil pump" and what does it do with your large turbine unit?

Remember - More details = better answers
Also: If you get a response it's polite to respond to it.

Online Running Testing mean the pump will be put on service while the Steam Turbine is running at Full Load.

I am sorry if it make a confuse to everybody, what I mean with Jacking Oil Pump is pump that supply oil for lifting up the turbine rotor. Usually use in the first start up or during turning gear (depend on the OEM Philosophy) or before unit shutdown in certain range of rpm of rotor.

This testing is requested to ensure the jacking oil pump is ready as required especially during unit shutdown.

I don't see any problem running the jacking oil pump with the turbine at full (100%) load. In fact, there are times when both the jacking oil and lube oil pumps may be running if operating according to the manufacturer's instructions. However, in order to verify operation of the jacking oil pump, please be sure a pressure gauge or pressure switch is installed in the discharge piping of the jacking oil pump.

Be sure to continue testing of the pump during shutdown. Also, monitor turning (barring) gear motor amps when the turbine is on turning gear.

Best of luck!
