Hello everyone, I am working on a Kettle tank with inside Steam coils. Is there any specific code for the design of the kettle tank or API 620 will work? Also, I need guidance for the tank inside steam coils design.

Please submit drawings or sketches ... Your use of the vague term "kettle tank" can mean many things to many people.

Like others of your ilk and age, you refuse to search eng-tips for already answered questions

Kettle reboilers are sphisticated, fragile pieces of equipment ... and certainly NOT SUITABLE as a learning tool newbie 20 somethings !!!

WARNING: ... There can be CATASTROPHIC ACCIDENTS WITH FAILURES IN STEAM COILLED EQUIPMENT

Based on your specific process, what are YOUR design and max operating pressures and temperatures ?... What are your preferred materials ? ... What pressures and temperatures are expected from your steam system ?

The correct selection of Codes and Standards for large dangerous and expensive process equipment does not depend on your arbitrary selection of a name for your component

Given the ZERO amount of inforamation you supply, I suggest:

- Design the shell to ASME VIII/TEMA (or equivalent; 50 psig minimum design pressure - 650F min design temperature
- Design the shell RV for conditions of steam coils failure
- Pay particular attention to vessel supports and vessel movement when the unit is dragged by the distilation column

Come back to discuss this when you have even a fuzzy, vague idea of what you are trying to do ...

Refer to Perry Chem Engg Handbook or your Uni heat transfer textbook for thermal design of heating coils in tanks.

Tank upper design pressure should be at least 20-25% higher than the max vapor pressure ( at max normal operating temp) of the heated fluid. API 620 upper limit on design pressure is 15psig, while that for API650 is 2.5psig.

dear: here! A picture for your reference.

The picture you have posted implies INDUSTRIAL STEAM PRESSURE COOKER and if so, the relevant standard is PV code applicable in your region. Do not forget to provide PSV to limit the internal pressure .

EDIT: Make sure to provide steam horn , whistle with handle.

Use it up, wear it out;
Make it do, or do without.

Thank You for your input. I think I might be able to expedite the design using PV codes. Also, PSVs will be used for pressure limiting in the Kettle Tank.

Whew !!!! .... Can't we go round and round and round a few more times (in broken english) ?

The original poster seems to have accurately defined his "kettle tank" way, way too quickly !!!

.... and he didn't get a chance to tell us that his boss is preventing him from releasing "company confidential" information here !! (editorial note: "Company Confidential, to an MBA means anything more complicated than a weekly timesheet)

Usually, questions like these can only be fully understood with a MINIMUM of twenty or thirty responses and clarifications before any progress can be made !!!! ..... Whew !!!!!
