Chher up dik, Lord Thomas B. Macaulay said, back in 1830, in response to Thomas Malthus’ gloomy theory about mankind’s future expressed in 1795 :

“We cannot prove that those are in error who tell us that society has reached a turning point, that we have seen our best days. But so said all before us, and with just as much apparent reason. On what principle is that, when we see nothing but improvement behind us, we are to expect nothing but deterioration before us?”

I'm not unhappy about it... bemused wondering what the outcome will be; there's really nothing I can do about it, and I'm surprised people are not concerned. It will affect my kids, grandkids and greatgrandkids to a greater extent... I'm slowly on my way out.

Rather than think climate change and the corona virus as science, think of it as the wrath of God. Do you feel any better?

The change is going to be generational so it should be easy to adapt to. I won't be concerned until the coastal elite start selling their properties. They seem to know more about the subject than the rest of us.

Being generational, each generation simply needs to homestead on higher ground.

With that said, our coastal cities and their high-rise buildings will be dilapidated and at end of life by the time the tides reach their foundations. It will probably be better to abandon the cities and start over than to try to dismantle and rebuild these monstrosities.

I think the dinosaurs were thinking the same thing... we'll get used to this...[pipe]

We've already seen sea level rise during human times at more than double our projected rate during Berengia.

We're accomplishing in decades what normally took millenia... who knows where the brass ring will stop.

Lord Macaulay's quote is representative of the unbridled triumphalism of that period. Scientists also believed in a thing called ether, that non-white peoples were non-human, that females were a different species, and that through this idea called Progress, war and famine would soon be eradicated (we all saw how that turned out). And we had not yet consumed the petri dish known as Earth (i.e., soiled the sheets).

We've all since learned a little better (well maybe excepting a few like Steven Pinker and Silicon Valley techno-utopians hucksters). We would all do well not to substitute inspirational quotations (one form of cliché) for fact-based arguments, for that way Disneyland lies.

"Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but they are not entitled to their own facts."

Dik, the year x year rate of sea level rise post Berengia was about 4x the observed rate today.

And the ice that was melting (nearly world wide) was a mile thick, too.

I think the reduction in world hunger and poverty are triumphs. I realise that for some fat first worlders that is of little concern.

And if you go back far enough there was no ice and no water, just a singularity waiting to go Bang.
How does that help my grandchildren?

"Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but they are not entitled to their own facts."

Cheer up, that's another triumph. If it wasn't for the last 140 years half of your (and my) grandchildren would have died in infancy. Or do you want the benefits without the penalties?

meanwhile...

and here's the paper itself

San Francisco commissioned a study at the very highly regarded Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratories about how global warming is going to affect our local precipitation.

I don't think you're going to hear much reporting on the findings.

Global warming is predicted to increase precipitation by 37 percent in our currently drought stricken region. We have all been told climate change is going to increase the severity of drought in the region.

I'd like to give better quality links but the findings haven't been widely shared yet.
