I wonder how much carbon was used in the production of LH2?

Musk's latest space crime is polluting low earth orbit beyond repair.

Not just physically, but also from the light pollution. Nevertheless, he's not alone; there's at least a couple of other contenders for the title of LEO polluter; OneWeb is one.

I don't understand the logic of high density. In my experience, high density promotes the scavengers of the animal kingdom. The only species we see are pigeons, crows, rats, and mice. In the rural adjacent cities we get coyotes, skunks, and racoons. I feel the residents of high density reflect the animal inhabitants. I don't know how anybody can accept this as good for the environment. Also, my single family home doesn't require air conditioning.

Even you should be able to recognize that there isn't enough land for everyone to live in a single-family house; just do the math, SF has 46.87 sq.mi with 8871085 population, resulting 435 sf/person, using the housing density in the avenues, which isn't even allowing for other things like stores, businesses, and such. It's the fact that there are people living in high density housing that allows you to live in a single family house on a lot that probably even has a back yard.

Just do the math - humans are the ultimate invasive species, destroying everything in their path.

How long do you have to discuss everything that is wrong with urban so-called planning?

"Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but they are not entitled to their own facts."

There are some problems with urban planning and mistakes have been made. When I first moved to Toronto. If I went into the office on a Saturday, downtown Toronto was deserted. You could 'fire off a cannon', and not hit anyone. The city was desolate. I mentioned this to an architect, Harry Pellow, and he said that when suburbs were created, it drew the people away from the downtown areas and when the people moved to the suburbs it created a vacuum. For a city to flourish it was neccessary to have a vital downtown. This meant apartments and condos (or something of that ilk... 40 year old memory kicking in).

'Mistakes were made' sounds like one of those minimizing excuses that politicians purchase from cynical PR firms doing crisis management. Our model of building and growth is so far wrong and so easily corrupted that the entire exercise should be called a 'mistake'.
If we insist on identifying a single driving force of urban dysfunction it has to be the vehicle and our love of driving alone in it.

Now, at last, you're talking (what is to me) sense.

Mankind impacts the environment in many, many ways beyond CO2. To be told that CO2 is The one cause on climate change is IMHO (IMAO?) unreasonable.
To be told "believe the models" ... nah, I know plenty about modelling to know models are not truth.
But the many facetted problem is too difficult to confront, so "people" have picked one. Fixing this one will not fix the problem.

I doubt that CO2 is the single issue that'll cause our demise. My money is on social unrest.

another day in paradise, or is paradise one day closer ?

Our vehicles are of great benefit. When I pass through rural towns there are many homes but they are so well integrated into the environment I wouldn't know they were there from an aerial perspective. The vehicle and our new found work from home supports this lifestyle. Much better than paving over everything, building costly rail systems, and building structures that require climate control.

I wasn't trying to be politically correct, but I think there were errors. There are sometimes unintended effects.

That's a real concern to me, and one of the likely and worst outcomes. This is likely caused by the change in food production and water supply which will likely occur. What happens when the US loses agricultural land and fresh water and if Canada has lots of both? It's not just climate... we've littered the oceans for centuries... now space... and the moon and Mars. Mankind doesn't seem to learn.

TBE,

I can only read that as sarcasm.

Do any members here live exclusively in high density housing and use mass transit regularly?

We're probably not a representative sample... I rent a 3 bedroom house, but generally take public transit; I quit driving about 5 years back due to impaired peripheral vision.

we're more Ferengi than Starfleet ... and even they didn't pollute their home world (or, more likely, evolved to recognise that this isn't a good thing).

Hmmm, playing the hypocrisy card? I plead guilty.
But I for one was not consulted on how our built environment should look. Put another way, I am not wealthy enough to influence any significant decisions.

...and if anyone is looking for some good news:

We were taught, in grade school, that the reasons dinosaurs became extinct was the small brain size they had (60+ years back). People may only be on earth for a fraction of the time they were. It may be that the conditions for creating human life may never occur again. [pipe]

(1) how many species were there in the 14th century? (I have a rough idea) call this X

(2) %extinction = 1300/X*100+25

(3)is this greater than 75? No it 25.015%

Poorly written twaddle. I'm not disagreeing that we are smashing ecosystems up, but well intentioned drivel like this article is not helpful.

Cheers
