I am a licensed structural engineer doing work in local industrial plants. I am frequently asked to do above ground welded steel tank design, but turn the work down because of lack of knowledge in this area. I am interested in getting some training, but am having a hard time finding it. Can anyone recommend any online training courses, live training courses or good books on the design of welded steel tanks?
Thanks in advance for your replies.

I presume you have a copy of API 650 to begin with?

A good book to read on storage tanks is "Guide to Storage Tanks & Equipment" by Bob Long and Bob Garner... It is fairly basic and a little outdated but a good place to start.

Thank you Clamont. I do have API 650. Thanks for the book recommendation, it looks like a good one.
I was hoping to fine a training cours (1 week maybe) to really get myself dialled in by experts.

It may be practical for you to attend the API Refining Equipment Standards Meeting in April. There you would be able to interact with many of the people who build these tanks regularly and ask any questions.

SEJohn....

Most fabrication organizations involved with API-650 tanks offer both the design AND installation/certification of those tanks.

Who would be welding, certifying materials, performing inspections and testing of these tanks that you design ?

Another good training resource is to take an API-653 seminar. It will acquaint you with the 'nooks and cranneys' of 650 and 653. I can personally recommend "CodeWest" and have heard good things about "Mark Smith" and Bay Technical. And it counts for CEU's.

Thanks for the replies all. It seems that the API-653 seminar may be good advice, thank you Duwe6. I have also found a few AP-650 design courses. I can see bennefit from both, not sure which I will do yet.

SEJohn,

Could you please tell me what API 650 design courses you have found.... I have in the past searched with little success.

Thanks

if you are talking repair or reconstruction design, get certified to API-653 inspector. You will feel qualified to work. If you are talking straight-up new tank design, i agree with a former post... why? the design comes with the tank. you would be better suited to research what tanks are readily available to a purchaser in your region, and assist with the CM.
