What is the draft of a barge compared to the depth that this pipeline was supposed to have been submerged?

Barges hit things all of the time. See this recent incident where a barge hit a train:

I know it's not good to assume but I think we'll find the pipeline was at the depth marked on the chart and the barge was simply somewhere it shouldn't have been. The question will be how the barge ended up where it shouldn't have been.

The article said that it was adrift when it hit the pipeline. That being said, the draft of barge wouldn't seem to be that great. You'd think a pipeline would on or near the bottom of the lake.

If the bottom had been shallower, the barge would have grounded. If it had been deeper, the barge would have passed over the pipe.

A brief overhead look at the lake doesn't get me thinking it's a hotbed of river freight transport. I wonder if the barge was owned by the pipeline company.

There seems to loads of dredging going on in that "lake" / swamp and the pipelines are all dredged in or laid off shadow bottom barges.

There was actually 3 pipes next to each other in the drawing I saw so they were lucky the three didn't break..

One would typically expect the pipeline to be buried in the lake's mud to 4ft clear.
When crossing navigable waterways, that increases to 10ft. Crossings of navigable canals and rivers are well marked with warning signs on each side, but that is not necessarily true of Lake crossings, when and if marked by signs, they might not be visible from the central area of the lake.

Einstein gave the same test to students every year. When asked why he would do something like that, "Because the answers had changed."

Of course, if it's true the the barge had 'broke loose' and was 'afloat' at the time of the impact, markings on the shore or wherever, wouldn't have meant much.
