An important client of us wants to replace the “Benfield Solution” by “MDEA” for CO2 removal in the purification section of his Hydrogen Plant.

The main reasons to carry out this change are:

1) MDEA consumes less energy in the regeneration (steam reboiling in the stripping column).
( “We must evaluate this energy saving”)

2) MDEA works with more strength (concentration) and higher molar ratio between: (Acid gas / Amine).

Both facts means: “Energy benefits” (less amine recalculating flowrate) and “Hydraulic overcapacity” (in the System: Columns, Lines and Recirculation pump)
( “ We must evaluate both benefits”)
3) MDEA is less corrosive

However, due to the MDEA reaction rate with CO2 is slower than the other Amines ( MEA, DEA,..) to overcome this disadvantage, we think, it would be necessary to increase the number of the theoretical stages in the absorption column to get the same degree of hydrogen purity. ( “replacing the existing random beds to the more efficient structured bed”)
( “We must evaluate this change of performance”)

We would appreciate very much any comment about the advantages and disadvantages in this Amines replacement.
Finally as I must recommend the amine type (MDEA or Speciality amine like aMDEA), we would be appreciated to inform us about the differences in chemical composition and behaviour between aMEDA ( or other speciality amine) and MDEA

Thank you to all the colleagues

P.S. :
Benfield Solution composition:
KCO3 30 wt%
DEA 3-4 "
V2O5 0.7 "
