I have recently started to read about engines. I would really appreciate it if someone could recommend a good book that covers all the basics and more. I would especially like reading material on the working of air cooled engines. How the cooling takes place.

Which book to choose depends on what info you need. I work with engines and hence think these are helpful:

Introduction to Internal Combustion Engines by Richard Stone

Internal Combustion Engine Fundamentals by John B. Heywood. McGraw-Hill Book Company, New York, New York, 1988.

Internal Combustion Engine in Theory and Practice, Volume 1 and Volume 2, by Charles Fayette Taylor.

You can ask your local public library to borrow a copy of each one -- your public library can borrow one from a university library. Check it out for a couple weeks and see if it has what you want.

There are some other engine books out there which are not as widely used:

Design Techniques for Engine Manifolds: Wave Action Methods for IC Engines by Desmond E. Winterbone and Richard J. Pearson

“Internal Combustion Engines - Applied Thermosciences”, Colin R. Ferguson, John Wiley & Sons, 1986. (ISBN 0-471-88129-5)

“Internal Combustion Engines and Air Pollution”, Edward F. Obert, Intext Educational Publishers, 1973. (ISBN 0-7002-2183-2).

These are more for fun than for professional use:

Some Unusual Engines by Setright, L.J.K., Mechanical Engineering Publications. 1975. ISBN 0-85298-208-9.

Allied Aircraft Piston Engines of World War II: History and Development of Frontline Aircraft Piston Engines Produced by Great Britain and the United States by White, Graham. Society of Automotive Engineers, 1995. ISBN: 9781560916550

A little less scholarly but a good read:

Classic Motorcycle Race Engines: Expert Technical Analysis of the World's Great Power Units
Written by Kevin Cameron.

Most of these are air cooled and the power was frequently limited by the cooling.
