Norway bridge collapse (Part 1)

The latest on the Tretten bridge collapse from Norwegian Safety Investigation Authority (English site)

- Sub-report 1 on the bridge collapse at Tretten on 15 August 2022 - Published 15.08.2023, 3.7 MB
- Appendix B - 33.5 MB
- Report film for download (188 MB)

These are Norwegian language links though Sub-report 1 includes an English Summary.

A further report is the works:

NSIA said:
Sub-report 2 will focus on bridge management and follow-up of Tretten bridge throughout the bridge's life cycle, based on the main findings identified through the technical investigations.

Note: In the reports, nodes are designated A for upstream (north truss) and B for downstream (south truss).

So then the Code used for the Tretten bridge allowed for using untested (experimental) methods. We know this because those methods DID fail. And a point of a Code is to disallow failure: "Oh, just put up anything you like, and we'll see what happens."

From another site:

"An official report into the collapse of a 10-year-old mass-timber bridge in Norway in August 2022 has criticised the structure's design and construction.

Two drivers had to be rescued after the Tretten Bridge, over the Gudbrandsdalslågen river in the Øyer area of southern Norway, gave way as a heavy goods vehicle was crossing.

Completed in only 2012, the glulam-and-steel truss bridge was designed by Norwegian architecture studio Plan Arkitekter and engineering firm Norconsult for the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (NPRA).

A recent report by the Norwegian Safety Investigation Authority (NSIA) was critical of parties involved in the bridge's construction and management."

The article is such an interesting read.

The report cites 5 particular causes for the failure. Three of those were site conditions. There are those of us who feel that if you can't design for the site conditions, you should not take the job. And there are those of us who feel that if you can't evaluate the site conditions well enough to inform you on that matter, you are also supremely incompetent.

The response from the design firm (Plan Arkitekter) blames "...deficient regulations..." I would love to be able to respond to a problem with something I built that "you didn't tell me I COULDN'T, so it therefore is all YOUR fault".

Such creative use of language is fully worthy of study in a college level literature course.

It appears that the engineering firm on this job (Norconsult) didn't feel up to the challenge, and did not respond.
