I feel like I am loosing my mind. I am searching for an NPTF thread die, not a plug tap, to cut/form a male thread form. The size I need is 1/8-27.

I can find all kinds of taps, but no dies which makes no sense to me. I have already checked the regulars; McMaster, Grainger, MSC, J&L, Rigid without luck. Anybody have some leads??

Well, don't blame me for too jolly post, I have optimism attack on job site. To say, as far as I know conical tap is not big problem so you can find the choice of NPTF taps.

But dies... how to run it conically? It seems no way, you need to use nearest lathe.

I didn't try so far, but as you can see on the link, if you turn on lathe with conical deflection set, the insert has predetmined inclination so you will achieve conical shape with thread profile triangle that is perpndicular to axis of pipe (without predermined angle on cutter insert you will end with profile trinagle skewed).

Check out your MSC catalog again. On page 311 of the 2004/2005 hardback book the NPT Round Split Adjustable Dies are listed. Page 313 lists the NPT Rethreading Dies. Depending on the material that you're using they can be kind of a bear to use, but I use them all the time with no problems.

Hope that helps.

NPTF means different things to different people, it is SUPPOSED to mean a "dryseal" thread but may people think it means NPT Female. This is understandable because there is no difference between the male threads, the difference is on the female side (the dryseal thread has a truncated thread root that the male thread crest mashes into). so therefore there IS no NPTF male, just NPT.
