Hi Guys,

I want to conduct the material nonlinear analysis of composite structures fabricated , which is carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composite materials, using ABAQUS FEM tool. However, in abaqus only have elastic linear properties for composite material.

the question is, how to manually input/write the properties of nonlinear material in terms of shear stress and shear strain in abaqus input file?
Thank you.

You have to choose the material model/behavior first. It can be elastic or inelastic with optional damage. Usually, orthotropic linear elasticity is used for laminated composites, often with Hashin damage. But you could also include viscoelasticity or anisotropic (Hill) plasticity, depending on what effects you want to capture in the model. It's also important which modeling scale you chose - micro-, meso- or macroscopic.

thank you for the reply,

I want to conduct the simulation on CFRP composite under shear loading. Then, I choose the material model , which are engineering constant linear elasticity and hashin damage. However, it only captures the linear part and damage only.

my concern is, I want Abaqus capture the linear elastic, nonlinear behavior and also composite damage under shear loading. Then, how to input the nonlinear properties?

you are suggesting that to use viscoelasticity or anisotropic (Hill) plasticity..

from my understanding, both material models are under metal plasticity.. how to use the model into composite material? how i can get the parameters?
sorry, i dont understand..

thank you.

You can add different types of behavior to material definition, it doesn’t have to be just linear elasticity and damage. However, you will have to decide whether it should be elastic (recoverable) or inelastic (permanent) deformation. The data should be taken from experiments or from literature. CFRP composites are really common so it should be possible to find some parameter values in articles.
