I wanted to get an idea of what guide lines that you guys use when sizing suction screens for cent pumps.
I have heard a lot of talk about what is best practice, but have never seen any thing writen in any of my pump books.

Most of the basket type suction screens in the refinery that I work are 1/8" mesh. We do have a few witches hat type screens. We also have a few that are considered "start up screens".

I would like to know when you use a screen. What the min distance from the pump suction to place the screen. What designs to you use, etc.

Thanks for the help.

If it is permanant strainer, I think for Centrifugal pumps 40Mesh is the size vendors recommed. Normally for stabilised streams in refineries permanant stariner is not needed, as no sloids are expected, unless it is from crude oils torage tank/transfer pump service.
