Does anyone know how bearing manufacturers go about making the rollers for roller bearings? My company is currently producing a roller vane pump and is looking for ways to take cost out of the rollers. I figured that bearing manufacturers must have figured out the cheapest way to make this type of part. Thanks!

The tapered rollers are cut and pressed with high-speed cold-headers into a basic form from coiled wire. Then further processing to get the final dimensions.

Straight rollers can start with coil drawn to diameter, cut to length, ends pointed, heat-treated, diameter ground.

Each plant or product can have various machines, materials and processes depending on the details, so there are many variations on an answer, I gave the basics.

If I was looking to reduce costs, I would get a few detailed quotes from manufactures who do this type of work. There are various types of info on the net, a search should pull up a few. Good luck.
