I have several Vaisala Temp/humidity sensors (HMP110) with RS485 outputs (2 wire half duplex). The input power is 5-28VDC max 5mA. I want to connect it to the National Instruments PXIe 8431/16 which has 8DB9 RS485 male connectors. The Vaisala instrument has 4 colored wires and 1 ground. I would like to know the best possible setup for connecting these sensor to the PXIexpress. What components will I need?

Have you contacted National Instruments or Vaisala? Either of them probably have large applications engineering groups that are very well versed in this

Agree with IRstuff, and I'll throw in that Vaisala support is excellent in my experience.

Best to you,

I might be missing something but I can't see why the applications engineers would be necessary. Can't you just get the pinout of the sensor, the pinout of the DB9 (it is a standard, but get it from the PXI manual to be sure), and match them up?

If it's just for a one off, you can solder wires to a DB9 solder bucket plug, wrap some tape around it and you're good to go. If you need something more permanent it might be worth buying some DB9 flying leads, wire it to a terminal strip and put that in a junction box.
