Siemens NX - Relative File Paths

Hi All,

I'd like to be able to make a copy of an assembly part and its child parts and have the new it2 assembly call the new it2 child parts without requiring a rename. Cloning appears to break wavelinked parts also.

So my question is whether anyone knows if relative file paths have been implemented in NX yet?

All you want to do it copy the assembly, and it's components to a new location? I'd use the NXZip journal:

Thanks for that info.
I don't actually have access to that area, but I guess what you are saying is the software does not have relative files paths natively...?


It's more when you are doing iterations of a particular concept, you just want to copy assy, parts, master files etc and have the new parts reference the new master and the new assy reference the new parts, for example. Each iteration assy has a new name but the child parts could, in theory, just remain the same, but in practice NX doesn't like that as it doesn't know the right file path to look in.

So the slightly clunky method is renaming child parts in the it 2 concept...but of course that's fine for 10 parts but would be too cumbersome for 100 parts, say.

Cloning appears to break wavelinked parts also.

It has been a while since I cloned an assembly with wave links, I remember having trouble with it. If I remember correctly, the trick is to fully load the assembly, then links were preserved correctly; if some parts with links were not loaded (or partially loaded), links were broken. Also, be sure to turn on the appropriate "load interpart data" option (in the load options).

Cloning should keep and update wave links and other relations.
Note that a wave link MUST "see" the parent in an assembly somewhere, which means that if you in the cloning clone the file which contains the wave link, but replace the parent part,
the wave link will be broken.

Cloning is terrible the first 10 times you do it, then you learn what tabs to skip and what buttons to click.
