i have a splined shaft which i must get duplicated, I have no background in splined shafts. ie, how to measure whats standard etc. Is there any reputable shops that would let me know what im dealing with that you guys know of? Or is there a simple way to tell if its standard or custom, or what to measure before i start phoning around? Also on top of every spline there is another groove, which im guessing is an oil passage as its used in a linear motion process? Thanks

OD= The outside diameter of the spline

-N= Number of teeth

A= fixed non-sliding spline
B= Spline slides under no load conditions
C= Spline slides under load conditions

SAE OD-N C spline

Another spline standard is an involuted spline with a pressure angle normally 30 degrees. Look at the profile, and describe it to your spline supplier.

Quick Spline gives you all major spline data such as actual and effective circular tooth thickness or space width, measurement over or between pins, major and minor diameters, form diameter and much more.

Download the quick spline freeware and get a copy of ANSI B92.1-1996

I use to work for a company closely related to Broach Masters and can say they do good work.

If shaft/spline is not too long, most gear cutters will replicate it if hob is available. British Gear Assoc' will guide you to shops in UK, see also Spline Gauges Ltd, Tamworth Staffs B78 2ER (if still there). AGMA in US. Application info is crucial if spline is to fulfill its function. you need to know if it is top or side fitting. Some hobs "top" the spline. SAE B92 has been mentioned. See also BS6186/ISO4156.

What are the rough dimensions of the spline and the part? This has quite a bearing on your options to have the parts reproduced. If they are small enough, rotary broaching may even be an option for you. This way you can just take it to a local shop.
