I believe some of the Pre J1939 Cat units are difficult to use the Deep Sea panels because Cat did not bring out J1939. The Cat D3456 engine for example.

That is correct, many older models used CAT Data Link as their communications bus. I have seen Deep Sea controllers used with older engines, but they do not have the full features like getting parameter information, instead are used mainly as start/stop controllers.
