Thought it would be a good time to start a fresh thread, since recent developments have put everyone on alert again.

yes

but its a bit of a bullshite message as none of the fish are native.

The places where i have seen it before it reduces the maint costs and gives nice fish dishes in the canteen and a thriving local industry in freshwater fish meat sales.

Makes a good headline though.

I might add the Chernobyl ponds apparently provided something like 10% of the local population's protein diet through fish stocks.

Well around our nuclear plants, species that prefer higher water temps takes over and the ones that prefer colder temps becomes less, but no "new" species have turned up.

there is a huge difference between fresh water ponds and sea cooling.

For years I scuba dived off Hunterston reactors which in a condition of young nativity I signed off some cracks on the pressure vessel loading lugs. I breathed a huge sigh of relief when they shut the thing down last year.

The whole area is alive marine life due hot water. We were mainly over on the on the cumbrea side that i know mainly due to the fact I didn't fancy getting shot for going near the outflow pipes. But they were more like whales farting...

Down here in Florida, when our power company (FP&L) shut down a couple of oil-fired plants (for later replacement with upgraded technologies), the government required them to install temporary heaters to keep the water at the cooling discharge canals at the same temperature as when the plants were operating. The reason (here) is because manatees use that warm water as a breeding ground.

Who decided that our current temperature was the perfect temperature and that any deviation from such could only possibly be negative?

I am not sure anyone did, at first no one knew so they had to study it, and depending on what species there are and if there is any very local and endangered ones it could be bad.

And as with the manatees it was positive, I guess they are a bit endangered with all the boat life in the area.
They could breed without the warmer water as before but the result would not be as good I guess.

‼️Ukrainian-style passes for personnel are canceled at the ZNPP, military equipment was installed on the roof of the power unit

▪️The occupiers set a condition for the licensed shift workers of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant that by November 2 they must decide whether to sign or reject the contract with Rosatom.
Other ZNPP employees have been given a deadline of December 1.
It has been reported that the passes to the Ukrainian-style station will be canceled in the near future.
Currently, engineering and technical workers of the station are not allowed to work.
Only operatives (change of management) have access.

▪️The so-called "kadyrivets" who patrol in groups of 15-20 people have arrived in Energodar.
There is practically no communication in the city, it is advisable to move from 09:00 to 15:00.
After 3:00 p.m., the probability of being subjected to filtering measures increases.

▪️On the roof of the fifth power unit, EW equipment is installed to combat aerial reconnaissance.
Another change of occupiers has been placed on the industrial zone of the ZNPP.
The team is scattered around the city and lives in the apartments of local residents who have left.

⚠️ Zaporizhzhia NPP is completely de-energized due to racist shelling

Yesterday, November 2, 2022, as a result of racist shelling, the last two high-voltage communication lines of the Zaporizhzhya NPP with the Ukrainian power system were damaged.
At 11:04 p.m., the station went into full blackout mode.
All 20 diesel generators were switched on.

Currently, the power supply scheme for ZNPP's own needs is optimized, 9 diesel generators are left in operation.
Power units 5 and 6, which were in a hot state, are transferred to a cold state.

Fuel for the operation of diesel generators in the mode of complete blackout of the ZNPP remains for 15 days.
The countdown has begun, Energoatom reports

Yes, manatees in Florida are protected/endangered. We have all sorts of laws here to protect them including numerous speed limits on the waterways that are supposed to help prevent them from getting hit by boats (manatees are VERY slow movers and not very bright). They are pretty large (I would not want to hit one with my boat-probably would do considerable damage to the boat!)

We also have rules that require automatic flood gates to have sensor bars so they reverse closing if a manatee gets pinned in the gate.

to be fair that's exactly the same effect I had when I was in Florida, way too hot for a fat scotsman strapping a spam can to his butt.

Two days ago.

IAEA: Powerful explosions shook the area of Ukraine's Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) yesterday evening and again this morning. IAEA team on site says there had been damage done to some buildings, systems and equipment at the ZNPP

Some thoughts from a a pro-Russian channel with decent authority, Obraz Budushego, saying the Russians might withdraw from the nuclear plant before New Year.

We can always hope..

Russia is unfinished business. Reagan tipping the sovs over the edge should have been enough, but the mess left, allowing the nomenklatura (the corruption and the rich old families mentioned above) to dominate the emerging economy was a tragic mistake. But the game is the same: the structure is rotten. Applying Kissinger-style realpolitik "don't poke the bear!" gives it way too much credit. It's not only about Ukraine anyway, it's about all the other Ukraines and Taiwans and other such places and the people in them. It's about the world we want to live in, basically.

I haven't read anything about Ukraine stopping deliveries of oil or gas from Russia through Ukraine to other places.
More then a couple of times when the Russians bombed out the electrical infrastructure in Ukraine so that they couldn't because of that.
Of course they might not have made it a number one priority fixing that problem when it happened, but who would. [ponder]

There is a price cap coming in for Russian crude of 60$ a barrel.

And they haven't got access to tankers to get round it.

The destroying the Ukrainian infrastructure isn't having any effect on the Ukrainian front line troops. And the Russians are running out of missiles. The guys training in the UK are saying "you think the Russians didn't cut off the power and heat in the winter in Soviet times?"

Thier own troops are rapidly starving and freezing to death. And they haven't seen a hint of pay for months. No ammo, no spares, no medical, no food, no vodka....

Not sure about the vodka, if it is something they seems to be able to get there hands on, it is that.
Probably better drinking vodka then water from puddles. [idea]
