hi ,

is the back welding ( backgouging + welding the back side) for a single groove weld considered as a backing?

by ASME SECT.IX-EDIT 2013- DEFINITION : BACKING:a material placed at the root of weld joint for the purpose of supporting molten weld metal so as to facilitate complete joint penetration. the material may or may not fuse into the joint.

by ASME SECT.IX-EDIT 2013 -PARAGRAPH QW-301-2 refers to figure QW-469-1 which indicate a strip as backing.

thanks.

Thank you,

per QW-433, it said welder qualified with F6 he is qualified for All F6 , this includes F6 with and without backing because the QW-433 shows F-number and backing condition ( with or without)

Qualifying with F6 does qualify all F6, however deletion of backing is an essential variable for most processes. Addition of backing is non-essential for most processes. This means that if you qualify WITH backing, the welder cannot weld WITHOUT backing. On the other hand if qualified WITHOUT backing, the welder will also be qualified to weld WITH backing. See Table QW-416 and associated paragraphs in the Table.

Also see Blocks 20 and 21 of the WQR sample I previously attached.
