When ever I try to convert assembly drawings into one big step file(using NX5) the step file does not convert correctly. The size of the step file it creates it is like only 5k. How do I export an assebly to create on big step file.

Thanks,

You need to make sure that you are also exporting the components of the assembly and not just the top-level file which only contains a bunch of pointers to files which were not included in the first place.

I open up the assembly file and go to file>export. Even when using the batch translator it does not translate the assembly file. My quess is there is a setting that needs to be changed. Single parts will translate fine it is just assemblys that do not.

Have you tried "Save As -> .step"?
Creates huge honkin' files for me ;-)

Are you exporting the correct entities in the "Data to Export" tab. ie is it set to curves only or other?

On the "Data to Export" tab,
Choose "selected objects",
then grab everything with a window and you should be good.

Works great for me.

If you want the assembly to go out with components then you usually have to let the translator know about your load options. Now I think that it will by default use the system saved load options whatever they happen to be, but you can run the translators from the start menu and save a defaults file for them. If and only if you save a new defaults file for the translators you should be able to get them to perhaps more reliably export data using the "As Saved" setting. That is to say that for most people for whom the default load options aren't always working I would suggest "As Saved" as the next most likely to get around their problems.

Also check whether you have set the translator directory for step files in Customer defaults.
File->Utilities->Customer Defaults->Gateway->General->Translator Directories &
for "Step files directory" Browse to "STEP203UG" folder in UG installation folder.
give OK, restart UG.
