I am about to purchase a new workstation and graphics card and would like some advice. I work with rather large assemblies and have had issues with my current work station. After asking some colleagues their opinion of what is most important I hear 64 bit system, good graphics card, speed of hard drive, and as much ram as you can get. I have chosen the following: HP Z800 with an Intel Xeon Six-Core E5645 (2.40 GHz, 12MB cache, 1333MHz memory) Chipset Intel 5520 (Dual) 6GB 1333 MHz DDR3 ECC Unbuffered RAM Internal drive 300 GB 15000 rpm SAS and an Nvidia Quadro 4000 graphics card. Do I need the six core system? Will I have issues with my server and other workstations being 32 bit systems?

NX itself doesn't benefit beyond 4-cores, but if you're going to be running any other applications simultaneously with NX the extra cores will help somewhat.

As for the issue of 32-bit devices on the same network as 64-bit, I don't see how there would be any problem as the files generated by NX are not 32/64-bit specific, unless you create a part file on 64-bit which requires more than 3Gb of memory to open, then that part file will not open on a 32-bit system.

Thanks John! I also run Solidworks 2011 and ProE Wildfire 5.0 on the same machine. When I run the install do I have to specify what core to install NX to or does it happen automatically. I would like to keep NX seperate if possible seeing as how I use that 95% of the time and do my major designing with NX.

Once NX is loaded and running, with admin rights you can specify which core the application runs on, but for most purposes, let the OS handle that.
Depending on how large your assemblies are, you may want more than 6GB of memory.

To enable the use of multiple processors by NX you will need to set an environment variable, either in the 'ugii_env.dat' file or in your system profile. The variable is:

UGII_SMP_ENABLE = 1

Not having this variable present, or set to 0, will disable support of multiple processors by NX.
