Can you provide more details about your site, and the type of facilities?
What equipment is proposed to be in the pump room?
Will each facility have its own skid mounted fire pump?
What are the requirements of your AHJ?
Thanks Stookey.
There are no leaks. I was of the understanding that there were required separation distances between elements of an LPG storage facility (which have the potential to leak at some stage during the life of the equipment) and pits, drains, sewers, where LPG gas could accumulate...
Hello,
I'm working on a large aboveground LPG bulk storage facility (2 x 50,000 Gal bullets), and would like to check the required separation distances between the storage facility elements and drains, sewers and pits, where gas could accumulate should we have any leaks.
The only reference I...
Hi All,
Can anyone help with these queries:
- With reference to the photographs of the burnt out lighting units in the original post. Why would only the first 6" of the flexible power lead burn like this? If there was a current spike caused by undervoltage, why wouldn't the whole lead be...
Thanks everyone for the helpful comments.
I am now better informed when I present to our AHJ.
As we have an industrial fire brigade on site, I hope our AHJ will agree that 'protection for exposures' is available.
Can someone clarify for me why the separation distance is different for an...
Hi All,
I am trying to establish seperation distance requirements between a Generator (outdoor) and a Building.
The 2MVA generator has a 3000L diesel fuel day tank (790 US Gal). The tank is integral to the generator package and located beneath the engine.
The building exterior wall does not...
Hi All,
I have a problem of 'galling' of some centrifugal pump wear rings. The casing ring as well as the impeller ring is made from the same material, duplex stainless steel.
In my experience stainless steels are particularly susceptible to galling, and I suspect that having both wear rings...
Thanks David/Skogsgurra,
I know I'm asking a lot! I have attached a simplified sketch which might assist:

A few other observations which may assist:

Thanks Skogsgurra.
Do you also have any theories as to why we experienced such major damage on ring 6, while we had no damage in ring 2 (where the fault occured)?
Thanks again.
Thank you all for your input.
It appears that there is a general consensus that our damage occured due to an under-voltage event.
The next query: How can we prevent this type of damage from occuring again?
Thanks again for your assistance.
Answerwing some queries:
-Skogsgurra:

Hello all,
Hoping for some advice:
I work on a large industrial site, and a few weeks ago, we had a site wide power failure caused by a short circuit of one of our 11kV switchboards due to flooding.
The site is served by 2 incoming 11kV feeders, and then distributed by 6 seperate 11kV rings...
cdafd: Most other oil filled installations in the area are installed outdoors in fenced compounds. Some (typically larger) installations are equipped with deluge systems, but not all.
chicopee: Thanks, I will look into chemical extinguishing. I don't know much about this.
Doh! Yes of course. Though 1 and 2 may also be difficult to argue as the transformers are 'outdoor' spec (IP55) transformers, and also our AHJ would like to trip the upstream breaker when the sprinkler/deluge is activated.
If I remember correctly the SS316 may be cathodic with respect to the larger anodic area of the CuNiFer piping. I.e. The piping will try to protect the SS316 sensors?
However, also agree with Edstainless, best to avoid 316 for marine applications. We have had serious problems with pitting...
Stookey: Thanks. I'm based in the middle east, not in the US, and the authority does fall with our AHJ in our case.
cdafd:Internatinoal Fire Code 903.3.1.1.1 - Exception 4 may be applicable to us. 2704.13 Weather protection - Will also investigate this avenue as to whether it can be reasoned...
Thanks cdafd,
Yes, AHJ asking for fire protection for this size of unmanned building.
Yes, this is one of the clauses.
I tried to argue that we could use exception No.5 as we have a detached substaion building. But the AHJ argued that this is not a deached building as the HV and LV...
I have been referred to NFPA 70 450.26 which talks about oil filled transformers installed indoors. Yet it is unclear to me what aspects are applicable in our situation, where we have an unmanned stand alone substaiton.
