Welding problems (hydrogen from the air moisture) in an aluminium vessel

I don't know details, I was looking for some guidelines since the problem is impacting in the project time line The oxygen measurement is a good idea. Preheat is one of their next steps I found this post and there are very nice recommendations: https://www.eng-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=343947

Welding problems (hydrogen from the air moisture) in an aluminium vessel

Hi, Some supplier is having problems welding an aluminium vacuum vessel. The hydrogen from the air moisture is diluting into the melted aluminium during the welding process. There are large bubbles when it solidifies. X-rays are showing the problem. The new approach is pre heating the...

    Bulkhead under vaccum

Now I would like to explain the case I am working on. We have a chamber which has a section (we call it "insert") that goes inwards. Here an sketch: I want to calculate the wall thicknesses A, B and C, so we divide the problem in 3 sections to support an overpressure of 3 bars (200 N/m2...

    Bulkhead under vaccum

Again: you are totally right. I can now see it. All the numbers are now made

    Bulkhead under vaccum

HTURKAK, You are absolutely right. I got confused with the capital P (single load) and the pressure. I'm still puzzled because according to the formulas: P = q*a^2 shouldn't a Pi be included in the formula? the integrated load (P) should be equal to the pressure (q) times the area (Pi*a^2)...

    Bulkhead under vaccum

I also checked Roars, but found this nice (easy) equation in the Timoshenko Next step is running some simulations, but I like first calculating "by hand" to get an idea thanks

    Bulkhead under vaccum

Here is the definition of "h": I get to the conclusion of the higher stress if we have the same thickness (h) and pressure (P) The relation a/b (outer/inner diameter of the bulkhead) and not the absolute dimensions drive the equation. What about the area? should it play a roll? cheers,

    Bulkhead under vaccum

Hi, I wrote some time ago asking for and end-cap to close a vacuum volume. I learnt a lot from that post and now I am bringing a similar case. https://www.eng-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=416816 After some calculations I wanted to present the new case here. Checking the results there are some...

    Non magnetic rails

But you had a high air pressure to lift the block/skater on the rails? otherwise metal on metal won't be easy to move 3DDave, I don't understand what you mean. It is a magnet in a particle accelerator. We need to simulate the radiation doses and check what material can take it. There is high...

    Non magnetic rails

I don't understand: you slide metal on metal?

    What about the blocks/skaters?

    Non magnetic rails

Thank you all for the answers I learnt earlier today that we can't use plastic or grease. These parts will be in a high radiation area for years, so they would be destroyed. This now excludes the solutions with PTFE, HDPE, lathe rails... Air bearings could be an option, but all the components...

    Non magnetic rails

Hi there, We need to insert an aluminium chamber (around 2 meters - 6.5 feet in diameter) into a magnet. It is 3 tons. Room temperature, clean environment. The total length to move is 8 meters -26 feet) The idea is using rails. There will be some holders at +/- 30º (vertically). The rails...

Aluminum alloy for plate under vacuum

Hi, the 6061-T6 seems a good candidate 275 MPa - 40 ksi yield strength 1 inch would have a maximum stress of 145 MPa - 21 ksi The radial ribs is an option; we want to use thin windows for particles (high particle particles, they need a clean path) to go through We are considering making a...

Aluminum alloy for plate under vacuum

Hi there, I am looking for an aluminium alloy with a high yield strength for an end plate for a vacuum chamber (it has to take 1 bar - 14.5 psi) The outer diameter is 2500mm (8.2 ft) The thickness is what I am trying to determinate (between 50 and 25mm / 1 inch-0.5 inch) What alloy would you...

    Manifold (distributor) for cooling

I have to double check the numbers, but in principle the 4 lines coming out of Manifold B need more flow than the single lines out of Manifold A. Wouldn't be better to have a bigger pipe from A to B to have more flow out of the B lines? Playing with the valves in the return, wouldn't this help...
