    Process planning and timing

Good morning. I am working on a large project with several moving motor driven components. The time needed to complete a components move will vary with the distance of the move and the characteristics of the motor. There are dependencies between one component to others throughout the process...

    MACHINERY FOOTPAD LOADING

Thanks for the thought but the machine has to be elevated about 10ft above grade and schedule does not allow concrete to cure. So steel will be needed to support the load down to elev 0.

    MACHINERY FOOTPAD LOADING

Thanks for all of your thoughts. Agreed, perhaps the 4 footpad hypothetical was a bit too "determinate". The issue is arising from a real world 70k cutting machine that is leveled and plumbed with lasers to within 0.001" using adjustable pads (there are 12 footpads under the machines). The...

    MACHINERY FOOTPAD LOADING

I would like to toss out a conundrum that I have worked myself into. It is is unfortunately somewhat related to a 2022 post "Weight Distribution Over Six Points" that ended up being a time consuming adventure for several folks. My question relates to the footpad reactions that we structural...

    Concrete vs Soil fill

Thanks. As for Va, I am based out of Va but we work in many states. I have not looked at frost in Va for a long time, most of my career has been in SC. I am shocked the frost depth you noted in Va is only 8", that does seem shallow. Even in SC our standard minimum bearing depth was -12" and...

    Concrete vs Soil fill

Thanks for the thought. The footing is amongst a forest of existing footings that bear at (-)4ft, so I am putting the new footing at the same depth to avoid extending my added load over soil that is already occupied by existing loads.

    Concrete vs Soil fill

In foundation construction (my cases are typically industrial and within existing facilities) I have formed the opinion that it is better to excavate a foundation, place reinforcement, and fill the entire excavation with specified concrete as opposed to a thinner structural section at the bottom...

    RISA users - offsets

    Thanks, point taken.

    RISA users - offsets

Thanks for your thoughts. Its unfortunate that RISA uses rigid links to create the offset I think. Particularly an Analysis offset. The usual frame of a floor system will have many depths of members, and if you decide to "never" use offsets then you are agreeing that your members will have...

    RISA users - offsets

I am curious to get a few opinions on using end offsets and/or Analysis offsets in RISA models. I tend to encounter a need for many of these in designs, if I were to really try to match the reality of a projects geometry. However almost every time I use them I end up with anomalies in the...

    Easy question

whoops, I am chasing similar COA ad PE in NC so I guess I have NC on the brain. I am sealing LA with LA PE...sorry about that.I have made this completely confusing. LAPE will be on drawings, and I am planning on not affixing a info regarding the LA COA. thanks...have a better day.

    Easy question

The company I work for has recently been licensed (COA) in Louisiana. I carry the NCPE. Can anyone confirm there is no COA STAMP required on the design drawings? I have looked at the Louisiana rules and I do not see a COA stamp definition, nor do I see a LA COA stamp on any of the stamp vendor...

    HSS T connection

Thank you again dauwerda. Yes your rotated image is what I am designing. I think we land at the same place, I appreciate you taking your time to describe the orientation. Also, thanks for connecting the two posts. I had the STI limit state tables but had not found them helpful. This morning I...

CIDECT - What is going on?

Thanks dauwerda. It seems you have some experience with these so if I could bother you with one of my overarching questions. In regard to the tables in Section K of AISC360 (specifically K3.2 in 360-10 or K4.2 in 360-22) the formulas seem to be derived for a vertically oriented branch...

CIDECT - What is going on?

Thanks to all for the notes about CIDECT. I made my google search a little more specific like robyengIT suggested. I have found Design Guide 3 and 9 online. For those in the future, specifically worded net searches and then scrolling down the list of found pages probably will reveal pages...

CIDECT - What is going on?

The error is still happening at CIDECT. I am interested in reading the information in Design Guide 3. Does anyone know how to find the information? Thank you.

    HSS T connection

I have a simple T connection of two HSS12x8x3/8's. I am interested in making a clear hand calc, followed by a spreadsheet as I expect this connection will happen often in the future. A few parameters that are in my mind: - this connection will be all welded. - there will be field weld...

    Beams on Column Cap Plates

Thanks for the thoughts and links. There is good discussion there.

    Beams on Column Cap Plates

I am designing a series of shop fabricated horizontal weldments made from HSS12x8's that will be flown in and supported by an existing grid of WF columns. The idea was to minimize the plant outage by replacing the equipment floor but reuse the existing column structure. Note, the floor is a...

    Burp holes

Thanks TLHS, your post helps give some code reference for a decision. I appreciate it.
