Spacing of Contral Joints in a Basement Wall

Just wanted to have a second opinion on this. I did some research and found that contral joints in basement walls are provided for every 20 to 30 ft. Is this typical for any thickess of the wall or is there any other better way of determining the spacing based on thickess and other factors...

    Post Tensioned Concrete(2)

Cecil123 - As rapt suggested, it will be really helpful for you if you can start working on actual PT Design before you can actually write a code to automate the design procedure. You can find loads of information about PT design at www.adaptsoft.com, www.cement.org and other related websites...

    Post ensioned Floors-"ADAPT" Question

Design of Post-tensioned floors includes determining the required PT force and any additional rebar required to satisfy the strength and serviceability. The ACI requirements are different than what they are for Reinforced Concrete design. To answer your specific questions, I would like to start...

    Post-tensioned oneway slab beam system

I am designing a parking structure that uses oneway slab-beam system. I was wondering if I can design the beams with min P/A of 125 ksi and add additional tendons in that portion of the slab which is not considered effective to bump up the P/A to 175 ksi (suggested prestress for parking...

Closure Strip in a One-way PT Slab

Do we need to provide a closure strip for a typical one-way PT slab to eliminate restraint cracking? The length of the building is about 350 ft. The post tensioning manual suggests to consider two closure strips for slab length between 325 and 400 ft. Does anyone have experience of not having...

Valuable tips to a Graduate Structural Engineer

Dinosaur and Archeng59 - Thank you for your comments. I have learnt a valuable lesson after quitting my first job due to lack of guidance. In this busy world not everyone has time to answer all your questions. But, you could get what you want by doing some research by yourself, and encouraging...

Valuable tips to a Graduate Structural Engineer

When I started looking for jobs, I used to spend a lot of time going though the openings available on Job search portals like Yahoo jobs and Monster. But, this didn't really help me a lot. Then I started working things out in a different way. I used to shortlist all the structural consulting...

Valuable tips to a Graduate Structural Engineer

Thankyou all for your valuable responses. And, to be more specific I am working under a Senior Engineer. But, not always you can find a mentor in the Engineer you are working under. I mean to say that the PE would just answer to your specific questions or sometimes you might not even get an...

Valuable tips to a Graduate Structural Engineer

I feel that to be a successful Structural Engineer one needs careful planning, continuous learning and valuable guidance from the senior engineers or colleagues. But not all the young engineers have the opportunity to improve ones skills and shine under the guidance of a learned Engineer. So, I...

Sizes of bars that can be bent

Thanks. I just wanted to know if different approach is followed in practice other than what is mentioned in the code.

Sizes of bars that can be bent

Is there any restriction on the size of bars that can be bent for practical reasons. Does the code restrict the bending (for anchorage) of bars whose size is greater than #11. Need clarification. Thank you.

    Bridge Engineering and Building Design

Just curious. Are there any structural engineers out there who are into both Bridge Engineering and Building Design? Is it difficult to get expertise in both the fields at the same time. I have heard from many of my fellow engineers that as a Structural Engineer you can either get into Bridges...

    Mat foundation (22ft x 16 ft)

Thanks for your responses. UcfSE, I would probably go with increasing the thickness of the mat locally at the problem column. And I would like to know if there is any specific reason for not considering the shear reinforcement. Is it going to be expensive? Just curious
