    blurred information/+- not showing up

No clue about your issue. All I can say is that I'm sorry you have V12 and didn't wait long enough to get V13 instead. While not the worst program I've ever used, V12 has problems. I recently got V11 on my computer and it is a lot better. 14159

    Getting back into work

Whatever you say guys. It's obvious that you naturally (I've been there...) look at this 100% from an employee's perspective. If you become an owner, you'll see these issues completely differently. I know because I was an employee for years, ending about 10 months ago. I look back at my old...

    Limiting Slenderness Ratio

I agree with "theonlynamenottaken" and 3dboy. For your second-order analysis, make sure you add a bunch of nodes along your beam. Some programs are not smart enough to capture P-(little delta) effects. You should read the 2005 AISC Spec. I think there might be some changes to the KL/r...

    Composite Beam Design

You could ask the AISC Solutions Center. They're super-fast and thorough. Why not use LRFD composite design? The difference in results are extreme and it's also really easy to understand, unlike Allowable Stress Dinosaur's composite design, as illustrated by this thread. ;) 14159

    Getting back into work

Beggar: I don't have the slightest idea what you're talking about. Can you elaborate? BTW, HP forever!!! Not sure about the 15, though... My 48g does FFT! How's that for cool? 14159

    Engineers with MBAs

No clue in general, but I know only one engineer who has his MBA. He wishes he would've gotten what he calls a "real master's degree." In his opinion (and my observations too, for what they're worth), his MBA didn't do squat for him. I doubt that this is always true, just my limited experience...

    Getting back into work

RKD typed: "Sorry 14159 buy there has to be some sort of social justice in the world. ...." Thank you for your well thought-out reply, but I have to disagree. I worked for other people for about 10 years before going back to school and starting my own company at the same time, going quite well...

    Getting back into work

Geez. I don't know what yawl are talking about. Everywhere I've worked, one can be fired for any reason, which is the way I think it should be. A company is OWNED by the OWNER. It's their company and they should be able to do with it what they will. Otherwise, why own a company? It's there to...

    Single Angle Columns

Look at the new AISC Specification which is a free download. It includes updated information for single angles. One key issue is that many of those weird eccentricities can be ignored in many cases. So much for the new Spec being all bad!!! 14159

    A negative unprofessional coworker

It took me a while, but I learned to not talk about politics, religion, child raising, or any other sensitive topic with co-workers. Nothing good can ever come of it unless you actually have a chance of changing someone's mind, a rare event for anybody over 22 with half a brain. Years ago, I...

    Tolerances for Anchor Rods Holes

I am curious to know why this is an issue. The holes given in the 3rd Ed. Table 14-2 are very much larger than the bolt, for good reason. Given no other guidance, I'd say 1/8" either way shouldn't cause a problem. You should post this to the AISC Steel Solutions Center. Those guys get an answer...

A good introduction to slab design from SAP2000 results

    >Will SAP2000 export to SAFE? I don't think so. I know the location of this command in ETABS and don't see it in SAP, which I have open right now. >Can I analyse in ETABS an inclined or a sloped shell/plate? I'm pretty sure you can, but every example I've seen was using the shells to create a...

    Opinions about the new ASD

"...The problem is for me to change to LRFD would take a longer period of time than to incrementally work in parts of the new ASD...." You will have just as much trouble learning Allowable Strength Design as LRFD. The calculations are completely identical up to the last step when Rn is either...

    Opinions about the new ASD

The new ASD is nothing more than a modified 3rd Ed. LRFD using omegas instead of phi factors. 89 ASD folks are bound to hate this. I actually can't think of a single provision that's similar, although I'm sure some are. I developed a design procedure for one specific component using both 89 and...

A good introduction to slab design from SAP2000 results

Both programs will give you shell forces, but I think CSi's idea is for you to use SAFE for design. You can directly export from ETABS to SAFE. Their watch & learn tutorials are great for getting started.

    MathCAD 13 preview

"And if I'm doing something wrong with V11 and it is easier than I think to pass on all or some of a worksheet to a user who does not have mathcad, I would be happy to be put out of my misery! (apart from copy-'n-paste via the clipboard)." Print to pdf and e-mail that to them. Forget about the...

    Structural Engineering: Need Career Advice

I worked for some of the larger firms for about 9 years before recently going back to school. 1. Whether or not you make good money depends a lot more on whether you become an owner than your particular position as a non-owner. As somebody else typed, you shouldn't worry too much about this at...

Going the extra mile down a dead end road

This is why I'll never again work as anything but a consultant. The cause-and-effect relationship is far too weak in an office, working for somebody else. You should start your own business. 14159

Question - Doing a Part-time PhD in the US

I doubt this would be feasible. A Ph.D. program is tremendously different than a MS program. The professors expect much more out of you and I doubt you can find any that will tolerate a part-time effort. I'll be interested to find out if others have different experience. 14159
