Should I Make a Career Change to Electrical Engineering

The only things I can say are that it sounds like you have the experience. One thing I noticed in the general industry is that LED lighting is more and more popular, as are lighting control systems, due to energy saving demands. I would suspect knowledge of implementing these features and...

SolidWorks World & Stump the Chumps

Good luck everyone. Which parts are the "free stuff," is that the vendor booths? 2nd time the convention is "in town," but I don't know if I'll make it.

    SW on a Mac . . . again

Can't seem to edit my post, so I forgot to mention, you would have to get the Quadro FX Mac card to attempt to run on a Mac. Not cheap. http://store.apple.com/us/product/TW386LL/A?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco=MTA4MzU2Nzg&p=1&s=topSellers

    SW on a Mac . . . again

You will get better performance on a Intel i7 computer, and that's not available for Mac. All benchmarks have shown i7 as the best option since you can continue to upgrade it in the future (see Anna's SolidMuse benchmark charts). Solidworks is not very multi-core able except for photo...

Need to convert SLDPRT Solids to voxels

This program appears to do this function, but may or may not be suitable for your needs. It can import 3D cad format and convert it to its native format then to a voxel format. http://www.whiterockscience.com/moritz/voxel.html

Need to convert SLDPRT Solids to voxels

Based on my understanding, voxel is to 3d CAD as TIFF file is to DXF file (one is mathematical and the other is discrete pixel data). You are looking at "3d" pixels because it's one of the few ways to work with highly varied data in 3d, as opposed to parts made of 100% the same material. In...

    Solidworks Companion Program

I would definitely say you could use more RAM (I get away with 2GB at home) and integrated graphics is not going to do very well (used graphics cards are available on ebay or Craigslist). However, it will run. People used to use much older systems to run the program. I use XP Media Center...

    Solidworks on Vista with 9800GT

I've seen used Quadro cards at decent prices from Craigslist every once in awhile. Under $100 for FX3500 and under $50 for FX3400. On ebay you have to compete with more people, though you can find the older ones for maybe okay prices.

sending Solidworks drawing out for product manual illustrations

I've been outputting to edrawings. Although I haven't recently tried printing to PDF (bypassing the SW built-in PDF). If you use edrawings, then in non-shaded mode it will print to PDF in vector format. This is good, in that it allows the illustrator to adjust the view of a 3d model where...

    Current Financial Mess

The OP asked about PMI. Well, many of the loans were "piggyback" loans such as 80/20, etc... Which means you have a 80% loan and a 20% loan. That bypasses PMI, since neither loan is for over 80%, but the financing is 100% of the purchase.

    SolidWorks and Adobe 3D PDF?

I just looked at some 3d PDF samples and found it view much faster and smoother than edrawings. I wish edrawings was that smooth.

    Four tens?

I did 4/10 at a previous job. I thought it was good. Now realize that many police and nurses work 3/12. Can you imagine working 12 hrs as a policeman? That is apparently a typical schedule. So in comparison, sitting in a good chair in a/c isn't so bad.

Oops. I posted in the wrong thread.

    Engineer + MBA

You might want to look at the site www.theladders.com it's a job site for jobs paying mostly 100k and up. See what they are looking for and you will see what pays that much.

    Getting a MSME Without BSME?

I knew someone who went to the Stanford MSME program with a non-engineering BS degree. I forget what it was, like math or liberal arts. Of course some extra courses were required for this person.

    Tooling Engineer Career

I would say you will be able to be a better designer if you understand how the manufacturing process is done. So basically do it in reverse, learn how the parts are made then you will see how they should be designed.

proven software to write instruction manuals with?

Framemaker is a common program for technical manuals. It is a desktop publishing program that supports large amounts of text, tables, formulas, etc... Adobe bought them many years ago. Way better than Word for this. Not sure about Solidworks integration.

    Fluid flow simulation

Blue Ridge Numerics also has a Solidworks plugin. http://www.cfdesign.com/ Supposedly their software is easy to use, and they may have somewhat competitive pricing (at least relative to the last time I saw the pricing).

    Google SketchUp? any opinions

Dassault has their own version of this kind of program. Haven't tried it, but maybe it may be more usable for SW users. http://www.3dvia.com/home.php
