To your question:Wouldn't you expect the potential new employer to want to check references.
Not necessarily, sometimes it’s just a bogus canned question and they never check. That being said some employers will check.
I definitely wouldn't lump boss and other co-workers in the same group...
I have moved for a job before. Pay increase good experience etc.
Depends on your priorirties and your "family" situation.
If you have no kids and company pays all your moving expenses its great. On the flip side if the wife has to be close to Mom then look out... you better stay put.
good luck
By all means give it a try.
If you deceide you don't like it or you're not good at it maybe you could work to hire your "replacement" and then go back to doing what you "like". Never pass up an oppurtunity for advancement.
good luck
My two -cents.
You are worth what people will pay. You move around a few times and your salary will increase dramatically.
If you've been at a company at year you should get an annual performance review minimum. That lets you know how you are performing. the pay raise or lack of should...
In my opinion, IT has sort of become like lawyers. The more of them there are the more you need because they create most of the problems and generate their own work.
From what you describe, I would say that is far too restrictive. The only way to stop or slow the problem is to get someone in...
Hey - I think I've got it licked now...the magic word I was missing was "Training".
We are going to train the person not to make that mistake again.
I can see I'll be using that word alot.
A lot of good information here. To elaborate:
We do have CDR's and PDR's. We do not have a dedicated drawing checker; I agree they are nice to have and I long for the good ole days.
I have taken the tact that some have suggested (ie) let QA provide the response.
To clarify the issue was

This question is for those of you that operate in a AS9001 Quality envirnonment or similar. I have a situation where I need to respond as to how to "prevent future occurences".
The situation simply is that we designed a new system. During the assembly of the first system by Production personel...
We are currently using a program called HarnWare (tyco)to create drawings of cables for use by production or outside vendors. Anyone have any other recommendations or pitfalls they've experienced.
Thanks
All wonderful advice so far which I agree with.
ttuterry - How to resign in my opinion goes as follows:
1. Type up a letter with the elements described by other posters. Just the facts, date of your last day, thank them for the opportunity, and sign.
2. Make a copy of the letter.
3. Approach...
In my experience a typical annual raise, whatever you call it is somewhere between 3 to 5%. Thats why you rarely get ahead sticking with the same company because you are only really getting a raise to offset inflation.
For a promotion its somewhere between 5 - 10%.
So if you got 9% percent...
Thats easy...
Response is " I asked the question first you tell me HOW CAN THIS BE IMPROVED"
when its your turn the response is "Great answer"!
If you are forced to go first, your answer is "I don't know."
I'll go ahead and brace myself to get blasted but my opinion is that you're making too big of a deal out of this. Work isn't a Dr. Phil show where everyone has to be touchy feely.
If you just do your job and document everything accordingly then if the other party is truly "in the wrong" then...
May not help but here goes.
When suppressing a fire in an aircraft engine (turbine) nacelle, the first steps are to shutdown the engine and the fuel pump. Then and only then do you introduce the fire suppressing agent. Otherwise you risk having all the agent blown out the back of the engine...
Wow - I bet this topic gets a lot of posts.
My experience (16 years)with rare exception until my current employer is that for most people "in the trenches" the way to increase your pay is to move from one company to another. I know thats not what you wanted to hear but it's a pretty common...
A comment regarding the skip the health insurance and pay in cash etc. etc....
My experience although not exactly like that was much different. My young child was taken to the dentist for a first check up, X-rays the whole bit and they recommend a whole host of treatments. About $1000 worth...
tstaples seems to have hit the nail on the head.
To re-iterate or expand on the point. Most all engineering managers will expect you to work overtime if its required for a particular job or project. If the norm is 50 hours then expect to work 60 or more just to get ahead at the organization...
Wow - looks like OT is a hot topic so I'll lend my two cents
You state:
"How outlandish would it be to try to negotiate 40 or maybe 45 hrs/wk as a condition of acceptance of an offer from a company that has mentioned that a typical workweek is 50+."
My opinion is that it is certainly worth a...
Bradley,
Do you make up a bogus revision scheme that only the designers see and then role to next secondary revision when you are really ready to release?
