To increase the weight cheaply, just increase the volume. Ciao.

Mike, I know many for whom a dream of learning anything comes as a nightmare. Ciao.

Should I feel like my job is threatened?

I have seen many expats here in India working as head of engineering with Indian staff. Looking at them, they seem to be quite in control and content. The issue you may discuss with the management is how much control they give you in the back office in India. You may have a very good situation...

    Plate stresses

If we think of just the bending stresses, simply supported plate will show more stresses. When you combine the in-plane tensile stresses of the plate in fixed-end condition, I am not so sure. What kind of stresses you are looking at in FEA? Suggest you look at stresses in all XYZ planes. Ciao.

    eng-tips promoting laziness?

The technical grip, experience, wisdom, wit and eagerness to help others, of the forum-addicts of the all these forums is a certain evidence of their sheer laziness. Only if I could work and live without this herd! Ciao.

    High water velocity over concrete

I am doing a preliminary dam design study, where water is jetting out off undersluices at a velocity of 25-30 m/sec. Too high, and I provided heavy steel lining over the concrete surface, properly anchored. Now I am under heavy criticism and peers say, I should go for high performance/ high...

    Committment Letter?

Legally speaking, any committment is void, unless it is for some consideration. For this reason there are legal bonds of value of $1.00. If you remove this exchange amount, the statement that I will work for you for my life is not worth the paper on which it is written, despite all the...

    unreinforced SOG with no sawcuts

If you have a ductile pipe (like copper) you are a bit luckier. If its like cast iron, it is doomed to crack and leak, if it is not stronger than I am imagining at the moment. Ciao.

    Steam Explosion and TNT equivalance

I can blow a balloon using my mouth and explode it. Does it count? Without going into numbers and quantities, I do not think there can be an answer to your question (which itself is not very clear to me). Ciao.

    office politics: is it everywhere?

What I believe is that politics is not necessarily a bad thing. After all countries are run by virtue of it, and doing quite well. What matters is the difference between acceptable and ugly display of it. Ciao.

    fabricated pipe

We do a lot of penstock pipe fabrication out of steel plates for hydroelectric projects. Generally it is done close to the site of installation as transporting pipes is more expensive due to huge volume of hollowness as compared to plates. Ciao.

Can You Top This? Extremes in Non-Ethical Behavior

In legal discourse, the "intention" is considered a key factor. There is a big difference in killing a person by accident or intentionally. But both are crimes, nevertheless. Ciao.

G-forces (Accelerations) from Collision of 2 Ships

The answer to your original question is very difficult, as velocities and stiffness of the ships involved are the variables in the equation. Why do you need to know this? thread404-36240 may be helpful. Ciao.

Types of aggregate to use to resist cracking

To resist cracking, rebar (or some alternative reinforcement) is useful. Aggregate claim, as JAE noted, is unheard of. Ciao.

    Pressure Vessel Bulge Assessment

Since the section is no longer circular, at some place the diameter (or better long axis) is more than what it was nominally. The stresses will go up in proportion to (long axis)/(nominal dia) as a rough check. Ciao.
