    NDE before and after PWHT

our customers also take into consideration delivery time. if you have the time to take a chance then usually it would be better to skip the prior NDT. if you are on a tight schedule reject PWHT can cost you quite a lot of time.

    'Calibration' of penetrameters

Penetrameters are found in x-ray, these are the things placed on a weld with holes or wires of various sizes to show that the x-ray film has acceptable sensitivity. Not sure about calibrating them. Usually manufacturer will supply certificate of conformity. Unless its something completely...

Integrally Forged Vessels (ASME VIII Div. 1 App. 22 (Accumulators)

Hi, We do wall thickness checks on accumulators for a customer. (posted in asme section also) They are built according to ASME VIII Div. 1 App. 22 Integrally Forged Vessels. The manufacturers report states a minimum wall thickness for top, bottom and shell. We always took top and bottom as...

ultrasonic ndt on 316 L pipe

3" is quite small for normal UT. Haven't a schedule list but I know its low wall thickness also. Spec we use wont allow UT on anything less than 5" OD or 10mm WT.

Is there any penalty on weld joint Failure

sounds about right, depends on which spec, some call for 2 welds extra from welders who made repairs. need a spec to confirm

UT inspection (flaw detection) on a 6" round x 18" long Bar.

dead zone shouldnt matter as you get 100% coverage from over side. dead zone matters for testing very thin things and for considering scanning paths to ensure 100% coverage.

    Brinell hardness reliability

I find the hammer blow Poldi technique quite accurate if you can see the indentation and know what you are doing, I know some companies who struggle to get consistent readings with top of the range portable hardness testers. I think if the reading varies 1/10 times on a calibration block it is...

UT inspection (flaw detection) on a 6" round x 18" long Bar.

Should have bought better quality bar. Any bar being used for machining should be well tested at the mill, automatically which reduces room for error. It is interesting both inspectors missed it (unless they are mates haha) but also very true UT is not the best method in the world, it finds...

UT inspection (flaw detection) on a 6" round x 18" long Bar.

Should be easy enough to find, especially in such a short piece. Bear in mind it is quite easy to miss something with UT. Calibration may have been done wrong and the technician may be more familiar with testing something else like welds. Problem is sensitivity as if calibrated on a 3mm side...

    GRR and Set-Up Process

Curious. What item only gives 0.000080" tolerance?

    Risk Based Inspection

Would most refineries already being using RBI or would they just have their own procedure? What NDT methods are covered in RBI?

Material is SS but UT set calibrated off CS block

There are different types of Stainless Steel. Austenitic is the difficult one to test with UT. I think some are easier and more similar to carbon steel.

    Enviromentally Freindly Pickling SS

Is there an actual requirement that pre-fab 316 and duplex pipe needs to be pickled? Build specs like ASME V and B31.3. I ask because I am considering ofering quick mechanical cleaning and maybe a light rust preventing coat as an alternative?

    PED and NDT / Certification

We have been asked by a customer why an EN 473 approved personnel certificate is missing a PED stamp. Is this a requirement as I thought if it was EN473 approved then they can work in the given categories such as weld inspection of a PED pressure vessel? Also what other changes must be made to...

    Enviromentally Freindly Pickling SS

Yes thats what I feared. Unfortunate. Then I have a problem trying to design a work station in the back of our yard. We have an oil separator which I have been informed will catch the heavy metals / sludge but I have to neutralise that "#%#¤¤% acid! Suggestions welcome...

    Enviromentally Freindly Pickling SS

Hi, We want to start pickling prefab pipe and pipe supports. I know their are a lot of acid spray washes that are suitable but it is difficult to get rid of the waste. I am looking at environmentally friendly methods. Can someone knowledgeable give some product advice on this? Materials will...
