    Future Career Options

My recommendation would be to see what other jobs might be out there. Specifically something that is different than what you do now, but still utilizes your skills. Perhaps in another industry, but still as an electrical engineer. I only have about 10 years experience. But I get bored...

    Engineering to Business Development

Thanks kingnero, I can be a bit cautious myself but think your thought on trying is a good one.

    Engineering to Business Development

Thanks Ancora, much appreciated. I think the practice of envisioning what it will be like is a good one. I do have a network and feel like I have good networking skills. Thanks again.

Looking to change location, need advice

If you are thinking of moving to Texas then I would look into jobs with the oil and gas industry. That is a stable industry that is hiring. The best jobs are probably going to be in places you don't want to move to, or never considered.

    Engineering to Business Development

I was recently presented with an opportunity and looking for some advice from people that have maybe dealt with a similar situation. I currently work for an oil and gas company as an engineer, specifically in pipeline integrity. A consulting company has offered me a position to create a...

    Civil to Petroleum Possible?

I am a civil engineer with my PE. I worked as a design engineer for 10 years, doing water main, sewer design, grading, etc. Nothing at all related to oil and gas. I then got a job with a natural gas pipeline transmission company. I probably didn't need a PE to get the job, and certainly not...

Petroleum Engineering Degree and Job Market?

I'll give my two cents for what it's worth. I have a BSCE and a PE, worked in commercial development (nothing at all related to oil and gas) for 10 years, then got a job working for a large pipeline transmission company. To get into oil and gas you really don't need an advanced degree. I...

    my next life

I find the best way to find what your next career move should be, is to just look for job postings which have transferable skills. For instance, I am a civil that was doing storm sewer design and was really bored with it. I wanted to get into something different but didn't know what. Energy...

What are job prospects in Canada like for graduates?

I'll throw one more company in the mix, TransCanada.

Transitioning to management, what's your experience?

trainguy, I think that is the most difficult thing for a lot of engineers who are getting into management, letting go of the engineering duties. You have to trust the engineers that are working for you and understand they will approach problems differently than you do. I have had many...

Are all engineers burning out or is it possible NOT to be overworked?!

It sounds like you maybe need to build your confidence. In this economy a lot of us have to take on more responsibilities, some loss in salary, etc. But I firmly believe that employers that take advantage of their employees like this are going to be the first ones to lose their best employees...

Transitioning to management, what's your experience?

I was curious to see what people posted on this. I don't think this is probably the best place to get a fair unbiased opinion on management ha ha. That being said I don't particularly like it, but I'm not like everyone else. I think you're doing the right thing to follow up on the opporutunity.

    unimpressive work experience?

Keep your head up, it's a tough time to find a job. I graduated in 2002 and it took me about 3 months to find something in an alright economy for a really low salary. The good news is that as a civil you can do a lot of different things. Don't think your first jobs is what you will be doing...

Transitioning to management, what's your experience?

I am not a project manager by title, although I have the responsibilities. So you can take what i say with a grain of salt. Like a lot of people in your position you have two main paths you can take in your career. One is to become a techincal expert, continue doing design work for instance...

Finished medical school/Career change to engineering??

I think those degree combinations set you up for a number of possibilities. Biomedical engineering like others have said would be perfect. You could do research in a number of areas. Sky is really the limit. I would advise you to look into a few ways you could use those degrees, like getting...

Out of college and dismal about job.

I'm a little late to the party here, but yeah it sounds like you want to work for a consulting firm. Like others have said I would stay put and enjoy it. Right now you are closer to the actual construction, seeing something get built. Sitting in an office designing something seems cool, and...

    Emails to Seniors

sounds like there could be a language barrier there? One thing you might be doing is telling someone what to do that is senior to your position. Such as..."send me this file". even saying "please send me this file" can sound like you are ordering them around. One thing i try to do is always...

    PE and state of employment

I think most places that would be hiring, would understand it would take some time to get reciprocity. Which shouldn't be long. I think for most states the process is pretty quick and is handled by the NCEES? I have seem most companies say something like "must have PE or ability to obtain...

Civil Engineering- Masters Degree Worth It?

Well i think i can answer a couple of your questions. concerning the project management certificate, i have considered the PMP (project management professional). My company is actually mandating that all project managers have this within the next couple years. So if you want to get into...

Civil Engineering- Masters Degree Worth It?

beej67, thank you so much. some of the best insight / advice i've gotten in quite awhile. Truly appreciated. I have been longing to get out of the office environment (sitting in front of a computer screen all day), but realizing that getting into construction may not be the answer. i have...
