Hi,

I have a structure which is made up of part continuum (solid) elements and beam elements. I tried to tie the beam elements to continuum elements by tie - node to surface and coupling (i tried both distributing and kinematic coupling)

There are two static-general step, first a vertical load and then a tip load (please see attached pdf). For both tie and coupling approach, Abaqus Standard gives me aborted runs because the time increment is too small. I tried all the ways of stablization but it still would not work.

For coupling, Abaqus also gives me warning that the mesh density of the beam elements should be smaller.

Can I know what is the right way to connect beam and continuum elements?

Thank you very much.

Hi,

Some suggestions:
1) it is useful to actually post representative error / warning messages
2) if there is an advice in the warning message you should try it
3) looking at the picture in the attachment and knowing nothing about the modeling intention I would use distributing coupling between the end of the beam and a node set on the rectangular surface of the solid elements.
4) if the analysis diverges might not be related to coupling
5) turn NLGEOM on
