Hi all,

At the moment I have a problem in modelling the plane strain model of a square material (cement mortar) with a pre-existing crack in the middle which form an angle of 45 degree. This plane strain model is subjected to the compression load at the upper part and the lower edge has pinned constraint. When I submitted the job to analyze, the job can be done but I could not see the propagation of this slant crack in the deformed mesh, even though I increase the load which was considered exceed the allowable stress of the material. Anayone has experience with this kind of problem?

Thanks in advance

Maybe when you release the load the crack propogates due to residual tensile stresses.

Dear

I have done with it before, and i got the same problem. Then i see that, the load will not effect much to propagation of crack. Just take a look at the others parameters when you define this step.

Thanks Corus and Phanhung for your responses. But I don't understand what is meant by Corus and even the tip from Phanhung to take a look at other parameters, did you eventually succeeded to obtain the new crack tip which moved due to loading application that we apply in the model? Should we edit the model to apply the limit strength of our material? last time I was trying to apply *damage initiation, but I could not run the analysis properly, I got error message, that this application only for cohesive element.

Dear

You see, in crack propagation analysis, we have three way to model (please take a look in ABAQUS MANUAL), and in each method, we have to define some parameters and these will affect to the crack propagation. Such as Normal failure stress, shear failure stress (with CRITICAL STRESS), or Critical crack opening displacement, cumulative crack length (with COD). So which kind of method you used for your analysis?, and try with other values of above parameters. That's what i meaned

Hope you will solve your problem soon.
