As the cars rust and it flakes off you have "leakage losses".

Our team of seasoned MBAs and PMPs will hire a brand-new STEM engineer, fresh from 2 year community college to figure out the stacking issues !!!!

LOL with their Lego Kits!

Kidding aside if they actually build this it will be interesting to see the results. Hope they're better results than all those dead thermal plants littering the California Outback.

They could just put regenerative braking on shipping container cranes and load ships during the day and unload them at night.

5 nautical miles offshore from Long Beach CA would be a challenge. They're having big problems just offloading them once!

Much entertainment was had :)

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

Hey, give them some credit. It's a great investment banker's honey trap. Everybody knows that Leggos work.

Wait till they find out that gravity storage isn't patentable. The Egyptians started those projects 5000yrs ago, but unfortunately generator delivery was a bit too late. And they solved the stability problem in high winds, plus concrete is not necessary when you have "green" sandstone.

Q: Why are there pyramids in Egypt?

A: Because they didn't fit in the British Museum!

[shocked]

Why don't they just use containers?

Then you could just fill them with anything reasonably heavy in bags.

Remember - More details = better answers
Also: If you get a response it's polite to respond to it.

Cause they're investment bankers and Bitcoins weigh what they're worth.
Anyway it looks like they are filling them with OPM.
That's why the stacks are so tall.

"ENERGY VAULT COMPANY" voted hottest new company and Winner of the coveted most Credible Source OF NEW ENERGY STORAGE (CSNES) Award by The Association of MBAs and the renowned Project Management institute !!!!

This twin award of technical merit and management competence ensures that America's Energy Future is secure and that there will be a plethora of management jobs, studies, team building exercises and post mortems for many years to come !!!

Congratulations to all !!!!

Top sarcasm, MJC!
The Association of MBAs and the renowned Project Management institute are near the top of the credibility scale!
When I want instant support for a $$ venture I call an MBA, and when I want to add LinkedIn-essential credentials behind my name for a 3 week course, I go to PMI!!

How many investment banker's and pension funds will be entombed remains a mystery.

"Seeking Alpha" is certainly no lightweight in reasonable thinking and deductive analysis of any new technology ....

Regarding investment in EV, they state:

"In our opinion, a small investment makes sense for most portfolios, but remember, Energy Vault is a company that is highly speculative and could result in total loss."

I smell MBA bullshit .... But talk, of course, is cheap

What do you think ?

MJC, reasonably even handed article, thx for the share :)

Here is another discussion of the sketchy Energy Vault concept and some significant reservations by one author ....

Aside from the massive capital costs for large robust steel buildings, as a mechanical engineer, I have reservations about the lifetimes of huge steel cables in CONTINUOUS SERVICE, the brake systems to keep blocks from smashing to the bottom of the pits, how about the electrical lifetimes of motor/generators continuously switching on and of and synching with the grid?

These massive buildings must be located near the wind-turbines ...

Yes, I am a sick old man with a bad attitude and a jaundiced eye about anything new.... (Especially anything lauded by prancing MBAs, investment bankers and probable worshipers of Satan)

Q: But where are the detailed studies by independent and reputable research institutions ?
.... A: There ARE NONE !!

Where is the pilot plant that has been running a couple of years and that has achieved an unbelievable round-trip efficiency (RTE) of 85 to 90% ?

How can they even make that claim without hard data from a long-running research from a running plant ?

Remember, this is the PRIMARY ADVANTAGE of this system over all other energy storage systems ....

This is an Investor's report from a preliminary facility built in Tincio Switzerland

Slide #25 states that this first facility has a measured "round-trip efficiency" .... OF ONLY 75%
.... but MBA/PMI management expects that to increase to 90% somehow very shortly !!!
.... (the newly hired LEGO engineers are working on that issue as we speak ...)

.... and when a cable breaks, needs repair or a motor/generator bearing set must be replaced, that will decrease the efficiency of the facility also !!!

BS is BS ... always has been and always will be
