YES.

OP,
Look up Fig 1-6.

Figure 1.6 does not apply.
The OP diagram is a welding neck flange.

VIII-1 UW-13 (b)
(b) See below:
(1) Ellipsoidal, torispherical, and other types of
formed heads shall be attached to the shell with a butt
weld, or as illustrated in the applicable Figure UW-13.1
sketches (a), (b), (c), (d), and (i)

So flanged shell to head connection may not be permissible.

@ goutam

You are confused. This is a category A welded joint.

Can you explain more?

See UW

@r6165

Thank you for the info. Actually, it should be a type C joint. But I never handled such a joint.

@gh61

Please see the following from Mandatory Appendix 2(Flanges), Fig 2-4

NO, NO.
You are confused.
Any welded joint on a SPHERICAL head is Category A.
Read again UW.

This is the type of welding I am referring to:

Which clause you are referring to?

Again NO
Why don't you read the text and not the sketch?

OK I give up as you are not explaining yourself.

See also figure UW-3 on the left, the spherical head.
Try to understand about spherical head.

It is a flanged connection. So it should be type C as in the figure. Type A is welded connection. This is my understanding.

It's worth considering that while typical flanged connections often use Category C joints, this may not apply in cases involving spherical heads. A Category A welded joint could be more appropriate depending on the specific head and flange design you're working with.

See my sketch
