I'd assume that Keurig at least does no worse than break-even.
The glucose monitors for diabetics have gotten fairly complex, and have been given away for free in the past, on the assumption that the lancets and test strips have sufficiently high margin and volume to cover that cost. It's a slightly more captive audience, since few, if any, diabetics ever get to the point of not needing to monitor glucose, and it's then a lifetime thing.

I would agree that Keurig probably doesn't take a loss on each machine. I don't know their numbers but I bet the margin on the machines is actually pretty solid- they're relatively simple.
The cost/margin problem with this machine, in my opinion, comes in large part from a non-engineer solving a relatively simple problem with a REALLY complicated mechanism.
You could build a pretty simple arrangement similar to an old laundry wringer that would do the job equally well and cost you a couple of bucks at high volume.. instead he took a less-than-ideal approach that cost a ****load of money.

I'm not sure of the contention (here and AvE) that rollers would work as it would expel the solid components of the package rather than simply compress them.
My intent is not to redesign this device by committee- I'm just saying that this dude spent a zillion dollars more than necessary, because this device was his first attempt at a mechanical design. It'd be like someone designing a building, and just adding things on until it stops falling down.

No, that's not true. The design was designed by "an award-winning[1] industrial design and branding firm." It was designed to win awards, not to be practical, or economical. Juicero's founder clearly had no clue what his business model was supposed to be (and managed to snooker VCs for $120 million) and paid for a design that people, like those in this thread, that would go, "Wow!!" when they see the machine.

That photo brings back memories - on one of the first Survivor episodes a woman on a tropical island, quite hungry, is so pleased to find figs. She plucks one and takes a bite to open it. I guess that was the first time she ever knew there was an insect called a fig wasp. Even as she was pulling it from the tree, I was saying NONONONONONOOOOO!! to the pre-recorded tv program.
