Mike W77 - I worked for a company with a similar problem. A third party was to design the item, but our company was responsible for both the cost of manufacture and the ultimate performance. That third party was, politically, buddies with the CEO of the company that acquired us in a heavily leveraged buyout and didn't care how much money our group lost on this contract as long as we still rendered unto Caesar 10%+ growth year after year, leading to massive layoffs to make up for the losses. I think, because the original design was so flawed, that it more than doubled the original fixed-price contract jammed down our collective throats.
