A total of 39 people are stuck underground at Vale's Totten Mine in Sudbury, Ont., Monday, CTV News has confirmed.
Nick Larochelle, president of Steelworkers Local 6500, told CTV's Lyndsay Aelick there are 39 people still underground, including 30 Steelworkers.

Its a long climb up the ladders., but most miners are physically fit and this is not a big deal

I understand the first couple of thousand feet are the hardest...

Did you mean the last couple of thousand feet, or were you counting from the surface down?
I have had to climb hundreds of feet up on both stairways and ladders, and it doesn't get easier.
Maybe a hard rock mine allusion? That works.

Vale spokesperson Danica Pagnutti said:
“There’s a conveyance system, or what’s commonly known as a cage, that carries both employees on one level. And then often below that elevator or conveyance system, we sling equipment and materials underneath it, and we had a large piece of equipment slung underneath the conveyance system and it dislodged, causing damage to the shaft and making the conveyance system inoperable.”

Fixing the cage in a shaft more than 4000 feet deep is going to be a challenge for some riggers.

I meant the first couple of thousand... if you can do that, you have it made...

A rescue operation underway for 39 people stuck underground at Vale's Totten Mine in Sudbury, Ont., has successfully retrieved 33 miners as of 11:25 a.m. Tuesday.

"The remaining employees are expected to be on surface later this morning. The employees that have returned to surface are in good health and eager to return home," Vale said in a news release.

Not to take anything away from the OP, but when one sees a headline with the words 'Mine Accident' it conjures up a totally different image of what actually happened in this case. It was not really an 'accident', or at least I haven't seen anything that indicated that. It appeared to be more of an equipment failure (which granted could be the result of some sort of accident), which while it apparently didn't put anyone's life at immediate risk, it was an inconvenience since it complicated the processing of getting the workers out of the mine in a safe and timely manner.

Still, it was an interesting article as I learned that more that just nickle was being mined in Sudbury. One of my friends at church is from Sudbury and when he talked about living there, he only mentioned the nickle mines and indicated that that's why he left and moved first to Toronto, then to Detroit and finally to here in Irvine. He's an ex-auto company executive who worked for Saturn in Detroit and then moved here to take the job of CEO of Mitsubishi America (which he lost when they needed a scapegoat after the rollover scandal involving Mitsubishi Montero's).

Apparently, they were loading a large piece of equipment down the shaft and something 'broke'... On a couple of projects, I've had to lower some large telehandlers down the shaft... never an issue.

On Sunday, Sept. 26, a load-haul-dumper bucket slung under the cage became hung up in the shaft, meaning that shaft and cage access was blocked.

Now the work of clearing the shaft can begin.

I'd heard rumours it was a scoop they dropped down the shaft but didn't post because they were just rumours.
