I have a used nordic dual ramp soft starter I'm using to start 20 hp 230 volt 3 phase dust collector. I bought it with no instructions and understand the line and load connections. Need to know the low voltage control -- have ramp 1 enable contact, common contact, ramp 2 enable contact, and decel contact. Does contact need to be momentary or closed ? Please help if you can. Thanks.

The contact must be maintained closed. For a dust collection blower, I see little use for the Ramp 2 or Decel features. Put a jumper between Common and Ramp 1 Enable, then when you close the in-line contactor, the starter will begin ramping based upon the settings of Ramp 1.

Thanks to jraef ! Does this mean I also need to wire a Nema size 3 starter inline before the soft starter ? I just want to get the thing right the first time. Thanks so much.

It depends upon the unit you have. If memory serves me correct, the Series 71 was a starter in and of itself, then no, you will not need an in-line contactor, but the unit may or may not have an overload relay. If it is a Series 70, you will need a full starter in from of it, the Series 70 had neither the OL realy or the ability to turn on and off directly. Post the part number and when I return to my office on Wednesday night I'll look it up in an old Nordic catalog I have.

Thanks to jraef. It is a model # 2534N00 Nordic dual ramp soft start. Any help would be great. I have a Nema size 3 starter (square D) ready to install if needed.

Yes, I believe the Series 25 was a simple soft start controller only, meaning that it needs a starter upstream. I looked but must have finally discarded my old Nordic catalogs (regretfully), but I recall the Ser. 25 as such.

Thanks again for the fine information, jraef ! My next and maybe larger issue is the way the utility company has brought power to my building. They brought in the needed 240 v 3 ph power (delta system) with the third leg (far right on the panelboard as the kicker leg (208 to ground). I always thought the hi leg was L2 (middle). The tag on the panelboard says phase B Hi Leg.
My dust collector motor is 9 lead "Y" connected dual voltage. Do I send the hi leg through the starter on L3 then wire it to L2 at the motor? I don't want to burn the starter up and I don't want to rotate the motor in the wrong direction. Any help would be awesome.

For a 3 phase load, the location of the kicker leg is irrelevant. Just get the rotation correct. The location may however affect any 120V loads you want to tap off of that transformer service.
