Norwegian ship runs aground.

Someone forgot to turn.

Typical Norwegian attitude.... A bit of a surprise, but nothing woke me up....

This forum is learning that loss of power/loss of steering incidents in the maritime industry are not so uncommon. Asleep at the wheel, is also a frequent occurrence.

Double negative there Tug - So these incidents are commonplace?

I get the asleep bit alright but thought a lot of ships were now on autopilot or does that mean they just maintain speed and heading?

A marine casualty in US waters, which includes a loss of steering, requires the completion of a 2692 form. The Coast Guard receives 6000 annually. According to Grok, 20-30% of those are machinery related which includes loss of steering. The data is not public. I assume most reported machinery related failures lead to some loss of control of the vessel else there are few other reasons to report it.

If it's true that there are an average of 5 incidents per day in US waters, I would call that commonplace.

MV Queen of the North ...... On March 22, 2006, with 101 people aboard, she failed to make a planned course change, ran aground and sank (around 1400 ft). Two passengers, whose bodies were never found, died in the incident.
There were strong rumours at the time that a male and female member of the bridge crew were definitely NOT ASLEEP, but may have been otherwise distracted.
In all (some?) fairness, never verified.

We used to have a river pushboat with a couch in the wheel house. It was notorious for being a point of conception.

On an unrelated note, I did take that boat for a ride around Point Conception.

It's less than a two hour drive from Come-by-Chance Newfoundland to Conception Bay Newfoundland. It is considerably further to Pointe-Parent Quebec.

Rinse and repeat until we reach Seven Persons Alberta.

first post on this forum, i guess its only right that it is on something that happend in my city ;P

there was only one person on the bridge, which fell asleep and woke up as it ran aground!

at least the front didnt fall of ;)

the lesson here is don't order an entire boat load of stuff from Amazon Prime.

Well, they've unloaded it and pulled it free (Norwegian). Doesn't seem to be badly damaged from the photo. Basically luck they hit mud, not rock, I guess.
