Interesting, it looks like the FAA is concerned about 5g interfering with altimeters on many commerical aircraft.


The current restrictions would prevent the use of auto-land as well as landing in low visibility conditions.

It's different to that.

When you to that one you get rolls of rubber and tears in the tyre groves.

And for it to happed you need to have the weight on the ground and braking hard. The whole plane is shuddering and you have to work the rudder to keep in a straight line because the braking action is constantly changing.

This only occurs with a silky smooth wheels kissing the runway on water. The wheels won't be turning yet so no braking and the weight of the aircraft is still on the wings.

The rubber hydroplane causes significant reduction in tyre life. This just about more than normal wear.

Must admit if there are any tyre engineers looking at this I would love to know more. Tyres are one of these things people don't think about but I think they are an amazing bit of engineering.
 
If it's any similar to blistering and delamination we see in motorsports, could simply be overheating issues from too high of tire pressure when cold. Heat wont transfer to the carcass as easily and when it does, the tire is then overinflated. Enough of those cycles and it'll easily start to chunk rubber off. Any little bit of moisture that finds it's way through a small defect makes it even worse.
 
I really only know the symptoms.

I only know that we have pressure protection at 400 psi and 200 deg C through a fuse plug

Tyre pressure is normally 160 psi and we get a caution when its below 145 psi on the ground.

And yes the tyre will be cold it sits in -55 to -70 deg C for hours on end. A normal 1.1-1.5g landing nothing usually happens. Its on this kiss it down ones the blisters occur. We wouldn't get a bollocking for them and wouldn't be noted in the techlog where as a hydro rubber damage would be for inspection cycle timings.

if people want I can run through the A220's brake system and backup. But as the braking system isn't linked to the rad alt it would be off topic. it seems to do a great job of protecting the tyres from us stick monkeys.

"Federal safety regulators say they have cleared the way for Verizon and AT&T to power up more towers for new 5G service without causing radio interference with airplanes.

The Federal Aviation Administration said Friday that it took the steps after receiving details from the telecommunications companies about the location of wireless transmitters.

The FAA said it and the wireless carriers 'have agreed on steps that will enable more aircraft to safely use key airports while also enabling more towers to deploy 5G service.'"

I have lots of confidence the FAA will do the right thing... see how they handled the 737 issue a bit back...

Because the phone towers are operating within their bands and power limits, whereas the altimeters are being affected by out-of-band signals. Not any different than if you rear-ended someone because you were distracted by your phone; it wasn't the phone's fault that you couldn't pay attention to traffic.

and that, IRS, is the problem in a nutshell; it shouldn't have happened. They should have reduced the frequencies as they did in Europe and Canada.

Aviation is something works you don't touch it. And OEMs and airlines won't spend a cent on something unless forced to by the regulator.

Their argument is that the tower specification were incorrectly specified.

This is going to cost serious amounts of cash to sort out. Wonder when the lawyers will come out the wood work.





 
It would seem to be a simple matter to determine which airports they cannot safely fly into... that shouldn't be too difficult.

Sods law means that the airports everything is good will be the ones with nice weather most of the time.

And the ones with horrible weather which these things matter the most it will effect.

 
If you think about the MAX time line. This whole period pre deployment of 5G it was in the most intensive certification that any aircraft has been scrutinised in the last 30 years and neither Boeing or the FAA touched it.

And its pretty obvious neither did Honeywell or Collins did either.

Although I have seen that the international body that deals with frequency ranges has a rule that new users of frequency's can't effect current users or hardware.

There is obviously something going which isn't just technical.

But the passengers will pay for it.

Can't believe that's the way the rule is implemented, since it basically says that any sod can force a new band to be not usable because their original equipment was designed so crappy that it gets interfered with by anyone regardless of how clean the other person's design is.

All Boeing 717, 737, 747, 757, 767, 777, 787
MD-10/-11
Airbus A300, A310, A319, A220, A320, A321, A330, A340, A350, A380
Embraer 120, 170, and 190 regional jets
All CL-600/CRJ regional jets
DHC-8 turboprops
ATR turboprops

And then issue the above AD,

Anyway here is the list of commercial airports.
