I'm at work so our group policy reigns.

It's all okay as long as it's okay.

They kept mentioning how heroic the billionaire was for assuming 5% of the cost to put his name on it. BOLD MOVE! WILL THE BILLIONAIRE BE ALRIGHT?

I learned a new phrase from that article:
Sui generis is a Latin phrase that means "of its/his/her/their own kind, in a class by itself", therefore "unique". A number of disciplines use the term to refer to unique entities.

Thanks Brad!

Interesting report. I finally understand the configuration and get a good look at the fractures. The reduced fracture toughness in the center of thick plates is something I'll have to keep in mind, as well. I pretty much already knew better regarding the other contributing factors they mentioned.

I don't remember seeing anywhere whether the steel was required to meet ASTM A709, the 'bridge' steel specification, which has stricter toughness requirements than some of the other steel specs.

I still say that for the design of what amounts to a bridge girder, they should have gotten a bridge designer.

I'm not understanding how the girder survived. It seems like only the girder web remained to take extreme fiber bending stresses. Also maybe the fillet welds around the hangar pass-through.

Well, at the hanger location, the 'web' is 4" thick, so that probably helped. Also, the fractures were presumed to be due to fatigue from cyclic loading and internal restraint, not from high loading. I don't believe the transit center had gotten up to running at full capacity when the cracks were discovered, so it likely hadn't seen even its expected service load yet.
