Hello all
I learning RAM concept and I am new to the field and I hope you can help me with my question.
There is an option to Consider Axial Force in Strength Design and I have read in the manual that this option means :
(using the net section axial force in bending design.
This is a very important setting related to the effect of axial force resultants (not necessarily axial loads) in a crosssection. If you select this option, RAM Concept includes the interaction of the axial force with the bending in the cross section strain calculations, similar to typicalcolumn design using strain compatibility)

my question is it recommended to use this option or it is better to ignore it ? and why ?

I recommend you run it both ways, and see what difference it makes. Then, compare to hand calculations to verify what you are seeing.

I assume you are referring to structural steel connection design.
If so, refer to AISC Manual (14th Ed.) Part 9 contains a section which states;
"Connection design has traditionally been based on simple stresses, such as shear, tension, compression
or flexure, not taken in combination...."
This section of the manual goes on to explain why and in what cases it is not necessary to
design connection elements for combined stresses (such as axial and bending).

I assume this program is capable of perform analysis on flexural members subjected to both bending moment w/wo axial load. The default mode is beam under gravity load only, and the option of "consider axial force" will trigger the program to ask for input of the axial force, and maybe the location of application (above/below NA).
