Well here I have a less convoluted conspiracy theory for you SSCon. :)

The mystery is solved. ;-)

The whole NS system is only worth 2 or maybe 3 months of war and I believe half of NS2 was financed by Western companies. Small price to pay, if Putin looks like a god and he's well on the way to cracking the EU in half.

I'm also convinced it was not an EU state. If that ever came out, there'd be no end to it, ever. Pretty much the same for the USA. I don't even think Bush could do it. The US always looks for "coalition partners" before doing anything outside the western hemisphere and that market would immediately dry up, or at least shrink to the UK alone, if that. I know cracking NATO is not a Biden objective. The very first thing he did was to cement that brick back into place.

<I didn't do the calcs, but 31mm wall is probably good for 80m depth. Depressure talk is a red herring, something they would say when playing the "we don't know anything" card. "We have to depressure and inspect everything now.">

It's a perfect psyc-op. The whole world thinks the US done it; "Biden said so" gave them the idea and that's half the truth you need to have to make a believable psyc-op work. It's a perfect opportunity.

Einstein gave the same test to students every year. When asked why he would do something like that, "Because the answers had changed."

Depressurizing a submerged pipe with a hole in it fills the pipe with salt water. Is that beneficial for inspection?
Depressurizing the one pipe with no hole if not filled with water at the same time runs the risk of flattening it (or at least the parts below 80m).

Well the deepest part where the pipe is, is 110 meters.
The dimensions of the pipe if intact needs to hold for the outside pressure even when empty otherwise it would have been damaged when it was put down.
But as I said it seems strange to me this procedure to empty it, to check the integrity, since it would just risk greater damage if there really was a problem. [ponder]

I think "depressuring" only means "emptying", as in removing the volume of gas inside. It just doesn't matter for most inspection purposes and if they did an internal intelligent pig inspection, they need flow and pressure to move the pig.

If the pipe was near the collapse from external pressure limits, it would probably have happened during construction when all the bending and wave heave is going on.

even at 110meters the external pressure is only 12 bar with a vacuum inside.

There will be more load on my grill LPG bottle when I stand my fat bum on the empty one in the shed to get to my secret stash of salt and vinegar crisps.

If it was half inch thick wall, I would do the calcs, but it's a bit over 1", so it's probably in the 300m depth range before it would be worth checking. And it's full of water now anyway.

I thought the pipe they where going to check was the NS 2 B pipe that is still intact and haven't been damaged by any direct explosion.

NS 1 A blown up
NS 1 B blown up
NS 2 A blown up
NS 2 B okay

If they do send a "pig" how will they get it back from the German side, is what ever is on the receiving end also owned by Gazprom?
Meaning if they wont to get it back to Russia wouldn't they have to put pressure/flow in on the German side then?

they want NS2 certified and allowed to pump gas. It will be impossible to fix NS1 until NS 2 is allowed to transport product. Also NS2 B is connected to a new landfall installation which is also not certified or permitted to operate.

So if Europe wants any gas out of Nordstream 1 or 2 they have to certify and release the whole of the Nordtream 2 hardware. Its a very Russian way of thinking to be honest. But its failed just now. We shall see in March if they have to certify it. If they don't have too then Russia has utterly screwed over 40% of its natural gas market.

Getting pigs in and out of pipelines is designed into the pipeline.

I wonder what is going on in Sankt Petersburg. [ponder]

And Petersburg is also restless, locals felt a strong smoke and a pungent smell of gas, some of the parked cars were damaged.

Nope, it was a gas pipe explosion. [bomb]

it happens regularly in Russia, the domestic gas usage is quite bizarre to us westerners.

Some buildings it will be red bottles in the basement others linked into some form of local distribution pipeline.

40 plus apartment blocks regularly blow themselves up and that just normal.

The standard russian pressure regulator off a red LPG tank is an engineering marvel... Some of them in use are well over 50 years old, they cost 3 euro each. They don't fail safe.

Well this seems like it was a underground pipe.
There is asphalt lying all over and big dents in the roofs of cars and blow out car windows.
Radius a km or so.

Ukraine did it. 😉

NO, it was the Russians who did it. [bigsmile]

“According to preliminary information, during pneumatic tests, a depressurization of an underground gas pipeline of medium pressure occurred.
The nearest residential building is more than 150 meters away.
The circumstances are being investigated,” — says in a message that refers TASS.

Recall that the emergency in the Kolpinsky district of St. Petersburg occurred on the evening of October 31.
Local residents heard a sound similar to an explosion, smelled gas.
As a result of the incident, dozens of parked cars were damaged, and glass in the windows was also broken in a residential building. Employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations and ambulances arrived at the scene of the emergency, residents were evacuated.

The report from Nord Stream AG, Switzerland, 2 November

According to preliminary results of the damage site inspection, technogenic craters with a depth of 3 to 5 meters were found on the seabed at a distance of about 248 m from each other.
The section of the pipe between the craters is destroyed, the radius of pipe fragments dispersion is at least 250 m.
Experts continue to analyse the survey data.

Just as a side note.
The Norwegians have mobilized there home guards "militia" to guard the oil and gas industry and it's infrastructure.
