    Positive/negative sign of cutting force

Noted. Thank you very much for your explanation, FEA way.

    Positive/negative sign of cutting force

Hi FEA way, thank you for your reply. From what i know, Assuming the block on the right is my tool(moving towards left direction), and the block on the left is my workpiece(which is stationary),therefore the force to the right is contact force, while the the force to the left is the reaction...

    Positive/negative sign of cutting force

Hi, I have a question regarding the positive/negative sign of cutting force in 2D cutting simulation. I set the tool as rigid body and give a velocity on a reference point at the tip of the tool. The cutting force in X direction should be positive as it is the reaction force from the...

    Drucker Prager 3D model parameters

Noted, thank you very much. I am considering using MC model for my 3D model right now, and after going through the documentation, I assume that MC parameters can be the same for both 2D and 3D model, am I right?

    MC model concept

Thanks FEA way, I am aware of that but could you clarify my statement about hydrostatic stress? For example, we do not have to provide compressive stress in this diagram, so does that mean that ABAQUS monitor the compressive stress on x-axis and decide the yield stress on the y-axis? Thanks.

    MC model concept

Hi, just one quick question. Since I only provide cohesion(c) and dilation angle(ϕ) to ABAQUS, does that mean ABAQUS monitor the hydrostatic stress during the simulation process and determine the yield stress? Thank you.

    Drucker Prager 3D model parameters

Hi, I am in urgent to find out what should i use for yield stress in drucker prager hardening. I managed to convert MC parameters to DP parameters for 2D using ABAQUS guide, but its different for 3D model. According to this page, it says that I can get beta, K and compressive stress sigma...

Nodal temperature dropped right after the start of simulation

Hi FEA way, I tried to reduce element size but I still got the same results. I assumed that my element size is small enough so far. Do you have any idea? Thank you very much.

Nodal temperature dropped right after the start of simulation

Hi, I am doing a 3D cutting of a certain material. I set my initial temperature to 293K for both the tool and workpiece by usiing predetermined field(for initial step). I tried to extract the nodal temperature of tool tip and I realised that the temperature dropped drastically right after the...

Tool penetrating inner elements of workpiece

Hi, after several testing, it worked. Thank you very much, Mustaine3 and FEA way.

Tool penetrating inner elements of workpiece

Hi Mustaine3, thank you very much for your reply. I tried the same thing, which is: *SURFACE, NAME=surface_name, TYPE=ELEMENT element_set_name, INTERIOR *Contact inclusions surface_name, *Contact controls assignment, nodal erosion=yes but it still doesnt work. Abaqus Error: Analysis Input...

Tool penetrating inner elements of workpiece

Hi! I am conducting 3D cutting simulation but my tool is penetrating inner elements of the workpiece. Here are some settings that I used: Step: Dynamic, temp-disp, explicit Contact: general contact I used to have this problem in 2D simulation but this forum helped solving that problem by...

Fracture energy value for shear damage

Hi FEA way, noted, I will try to adjust the value of fracture energy. thank you very much.

Fracture energy value for shear damage

Hi, I am conducting a 2d cutting simulation of a certain material, and I calculated the fracture energy from the shear stress-strain curve according to this formula provided by abaqus documentation. (https://abaqus-docs.mit.edu/2017/English/SIMACAEMATRefMap/simamat-c-damageevolductile.htm)...

    Element distortion in 3D machining

Hi FEA way, element deletion is enabled. Will surface-to-surface contact help? I tried using it before, but it takes forever to run. As for the damage criteria, I ran before with high/low fracture strain/fracture energy but i get the same results. I succeeded once with explicit step(without...

    Element distortion in 3D machining

Hi everyone, Im trying to realise ultrasonic machining of a certain material, but I encountered element distortion problem for my 3D simulation. I had no problem on 2D simulation, and I used the same material properties for 3D. Drucker prager plasticity shear damage general contact...

Drucker Prager Hardening model and Shear damage

Hi everyone, First, I would like to ask about the conversion between compressive and shear yield strength. is it possible to convert compressive yield strength to shear yield strength for D-P criteria? Second, for shear damage, the fracture strain means fracture strain from a shear test or...
