Procedure Qualifications of DIfferent Heat Treat Conditions per Section VIII UG-84

I believe the intent of section viii ug-84 (h)(2)(b) implies the material ultimately qualified in the pqrs will need to be in the same heat treat condition, not necessarily the same combination directly welded each time meaning I can qualify one heat treat condition to another and still be...

Procedure Qualifications of DIfferent Heat Treat Conditions per Section VIII UG-84

you are correct sharmass. All of the material is the same P number and Group number. I also have different Group numbered P number materials, but I do believe the same rule applies because I will be Impact testing the HAZ.

Procedure Qualifications of DIfferent Heat Treat Conditions per Section VIII UG-84

Correct it is, but if I qualify with impact testing a normalized coupon and a quenched and tempered coupon of the same p number and group number would it qualify both heat treat conditions to themselves as well as to each other.

Procedure Qualifications of DIfferent Heat Treat Conditions per Section VIII UG-84

I am thinking it does based on the welding procedure will have successfull mechanical properties in the BM, WM, and HAZ, so the weld and mechanical properties per say won't be affected negatively whether it's one condition or the other.

From AWS 5.20 To AWS 5.36

A5.20 will be adopted by the A5.36 to include all of the carbon steel flux core electrodes. Some manufactures have moved to this (Bohler is one), but few have followed yet. I dont think it is mandatory for the filler metal manufacturers to change until next year. I think, but I have ran into...

Procedure Qualifications of DIfferent Heat Treat Conditions per Section VIII UG-84

Hello All, Per ASME Section VIII Division 1 Part UG-84 (H)(2)(b), when Impact testing is required material shall be in the same heat treat condition as the material in fabrication. I understand this completely, however, Per ASME Section IX QW-403.5 (c) Welded plates of different Group numbers in...

    ASME VIII welding Accepatnce

The ASME code does not state per say any verbage of recommended training hours. It could be anywhere from a one hour course to a 40 hour training program. Depending on the process and variables you as an employer determines the appropriate training. Sorry for skipping the question previously.

    Section VIII Impact Requirements

I agree with metengr. The plates as stated have to in the same condition as fabrication.

B31.3 Charpy Impact Requirements for PQR

you are correct. E7010 and E7018 are two different types of electrodes and therefore would both need separate Impact values.

    ASME VIII welding Accepatnce

If you look at UW-30 through UW- 37 for information regarding undercut or as they call it "reduction in thickness". best bet is to follow section IX for those re-test requirements.

    ASME Code Case 2450

Yes, currently I am Impact testing every Heat number Base Metal and weld metal heat number (BM,HAZ, and WM). Thanks for the clarification Metengr. I thought it would be yes.

    All-around welding symbol

The weld symbol is incorrectly provided on the joint detail. IMO is correct, the joint detail would turn to a square-groove or other groove joint detail on the top side. The design engineer can issue a revision to the drawing if desired to correct the misinterpretation of the symbol. You could...

Recommendation Welding consumable for CTOD test

Possibly an E8018-C1 electrode for SMAW or equivalent and an F7A8-EH12K-H8 SAW electrode/flux for SAW. You can contact ESAB or Lincoln for some advice particular to your job specs and actual performance needed, but that should give you a pretty good start. I hope that helps.

What is the CTOD temperature requirement?

Qualifying ar400 steel to the D1.1 code

I agree with hold. Section IV will list this material as unlisted and you will need to have a weld procedure for all base materials being welded to the AR400. The filer materials can be E71T-1X (CO2 or AR/CO2 would work) just depends on the thickness of material to what gas mix i would use. CO2...

AWS vs ASME thickness ranges for welder qualifications

The Engineer can accept previous qualification to other construction codes as they see fit. If not than it is best for quality and documentation stand points to have the welders qualified in accordance with the code of construction being used.

    welding symbols

I agree with GTAW on this one. He hit the nail on the head.

    Change in groove type

I agree with Pand. If the weld in the other joint detail is a PJP and you qualified a CJP groove detail, you have to evaluate the procedure per Clause 4.11.3. Hope this helps

Plate or Box Tube for WPS Qualification.

You need to qualify a new WPS. Box tubing WPS qualification requires qualification to tubular connections the macro-etch samples and such as listed in AWS D1.1 if a T-Y-K connection is involved. Also is the joint CJP or PJP in production and in what configuration. It could be a T-Y-K connection...

welder qualifications when two methods are used

I agree with GTAW, Section IX is not a stand alone code. You must also comply with the requirements of the code of construction like B31.1 or ASME Section VIII Division 1. You can qualify to section IX both processes in a single coupon as long as you list both essential, non-essential, and when...
