Number of women in engineering

I wish there were a lot more women in Engineering...The ones' I have run it to were very good. Highly organized. I always have great respect for a female engineer knowing they juggle mother role and engineer role.

Have a job offer, waiting on another...Do I contact them?

Take the first Offer. Start working. If the other offer shows up and you decide that it is better, politely inform the first company you decided to work at company #2. Never look back.

    Career Advice Needed

Although $12/hour would not support a person's living expenses, you are a student after all. If you are happy and learning a lot, stick it out until you graduate, if you can. If a significant offer doesn't surface from that company after graduation, then they knew you would be moving on anyway...

    Goals for the year

So everyone is in agreement. S.M.A.R.T. is S.W.O.T. The smart system a silly waste of time.

    Slow Down

Is it just me or does the original post claim Swedens' population to be 2 million? The CIA world factbook estimates the population to be around 9 million. <shrug> Minor point in terms of the message the writer is trying too convey. The writer paints a pretty picture, with a nice "feel good"...

    Going to the Dark Side

Thanks Casseopeia, For a brief moment I was actually beginning to believe the US system was above the rest of the worlds' in terms of logical debating and weighing of actual facts, etc. At least in a foreign country you can bribe the "Law" cheaply and they go away and leave you alone. The fact...

    Column Failure

Mr. Craine, "Another thought just occurred to me, what if I put plates on the face of the columns perpendicular to the direction of the force and throughbolt enough threaded rods to replace the needed ties? What do you think? " Your idea of dropping down in front of the pedestal and attaching...

    Column Failure

Mr. Craine, The link for your photo does not seem to work. Can this be updated?

    Level Tolerances in Concrete Construction

Regardless of allowable tolerances, the Contractor is using a technicality to wiggle out of shoddy workmanship. Unless you absolutely are getting a great deal or some other reason for buying, I would stipulate the floor must be leveled (if you want to put down carpet). Get it in writing! Or get...

Effect of ridge vent (unnailed plywood edge) on structure

I found a reference to this in the APA literature called "Introduction to Lateral Design" which states that "A continuous ridge vent can be used with an "Unblocked Diaphragm". An unblocked diaphragm has no requirement for blocking between unsupported edges of adjacent panels. It also states you...

    Project Outsourcing

<quote>Is there any particular reason why you expect to be paid ten, twenty or one hundred times the Indian engineer's pay, if you can only provide the same standard of work?</quote> This doesn't make sense to me. I think of an invisible line that surrounds the United States. People working on...

    Your Thought On "Planners"

Errr, I am embarassed to say I am going backwards technologically. One of my Mantras is "The Tool should fit my style, I should not be forced to fit the Tools' style". I find this especially true of PDA's and laptops. This means that I have tried PDA phones, plain PDA, day timer, yellow pads...

    Project Outsourcing

I am not sure what the correct forum is for this question, so here goes. What is everyone's perception of project outsourcing. For instance, I know of a major engineering company who uses overseas personnel to do the work, quite possibly without supervision of an ABET educated and qualified PE...

BIM - The Craze of Building Information Modeling

This was comical, I had read 2 articles today about BIMs and REVIT and I was just about to pose a question about whether anyone had tried REVIT and Viola! There this thread was... I was majorly intrigued by the claim, in one of the articles, of Revit structural that it could incorporate RISA 3D...

    dgn to dwg dgn2dwg

I have worked for some large companies who did not have any ways to make a clean export from Microstation to Autocad. If you find something please post it back here, thanks.

    PE experience

No offence, but your not going to get accepted to take the exam. You have two years engineering experience. You need two more years.

    Studying Engineering with Physics degree

Hi Echo- I had a similar experience to what you are describing. I obtained a Bachelors in Design of Architecture. Worked some, though not as an Architectural Intern. Then, figured I could increase my salary and marketability faster and better by getting a Civil degree. Quite a few hours...

Career advice for an entry level engineer

PaKaz-I really respect your pursuit of answers-you keep digging, which is the sign of a good engineer. One point I never saw brought up was the issue of marketability within the Engineering community. Ignoring the question of quality of school for MS, the mere fact of having the MS in your...

    Question about your (life) partner

Missouri-I am sure you are right, I have not looked hard enough or maybe let one bad experience dictate my future thinking. To tell the truth, dating a woman in sales was always a one sided conversation. Lots of talk about her work, her colleagues, her boss, her travel, etc. When I would start...
