(Another) TYP Question

Hey Folks

I know people have asked about using TYP on drawings ad infinitum on this forum.
But I'm wondering how you handle repetitive details in 2D drawings, not repetitive features.

So if I'm calling out the hole size in a hole pattern in one view; I use 4X DIA .25 etc, sure.
How about a Detail A that looks at one of these holes only. The detail shows one DIA .25 call-out for the hole. I'm used to adding TYP 4PLCS under the title of the detail.

But these guys don't like it. They are using the no TYP in y14.5-1994+ argument and want me to put 4X Detail A as the detail title. That looks goofy to me.

Any thoughts?

"4X DETAIL A" is how I'd do it. This method is shown in Fig. 7-37 of ASME Y14.5-2009. Note that I'd only do this if the three imaginary detail views not being shown are completely identical.

it's just something about AX B that makes me automatically look for the other places in the vicinity whereas the detail can be on a separate sheet 35 pages back.
but alright, you're right, time to play ball. i'll do it that way.

Well... looking for other places in the vicinity seems quite reasonable. If the location of each instance of the detail view is not readily apparent, you might want to add some additional info to clarify.

Out of curiosity, what sort of stuff are you drawing? I've never had to deal with anywhere near 35 sheets in my little corner of the world.

If there are 4 holes on the part of the same size and shape, then I would label the Detail View like this:

DETAIL A
SCALE 2:1
4X

If there are many of the same holes (so many that the quantity doesn't matter), then I would use the TYP instead of the nnnX

Your drawing must provide an unambiguous specification of your part. When you apply 4X to a hole specification or a detail view, the fabricator and inspector know that there are four details, and four only. It does not apply to that fifth item that looks sort of like it. This means a little more effort by you at your CAD station, and less work and confusion and fewer mistakes for everyone else.
