Um. I'm not quite sure how "Climate Change Engineering Solutions" became "Knitting patterns for the Trendies", but whatever floats your boat.

It's easy Greg... I mentioned a while back that the problem is way beyond my skills, and that the best I could do was to provide information so that others with better skills may be able to address the problem. Also what progress, if any, has been made. [pipe]

Dik -

A lot of progress has been made in de-bunking the obviously political and false narratives spread by the elitist world leaders (like Al Gore, AOC) and the radical anti-prosperity activists (like Greta Thundberg).

Unfortunately, a lot MORE harm has been caused by the neo-Marxist intrusion into our universities and corporations. Where they have poisoned our youth with faux-academia that posits that all capitalism is bad and our country needs to atone for somehow causing all the problems in the world. Where actual truth and good science are censored because they don't align with DEI or social justice goals.

It's an upcoming problem... notwithstanding the people you mentioned, it happening. We just don't know the extent.

Why give the people actively getting in the way of solutions the time of day of that is the case? If it is an existential problem, why trivialize it with a quilt?

"Every little bit helps." LOL

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

Sustainability...

"Japan's biggest-ever earthquake in 2011 caused a tsunami - and the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant went into meltdown. The devastation displaced over a hundred and 50,000 people and many never returned.

Soma, in the north of the region, is a place rebuilt to entice populations back to the area - and it has unrivalled green credentials.

The Soma project serves as a testbed of sustainable ideas which could be rolled out across Japan - and around the world.

Tech-loving traveller Paul Carter is in Japan to find out more."

Energy Transfer...

"With space on land at a premium in Japan, new locations to generate solar energy are being sought. This means innovators are turning to the sea to meet our energy needs in the form of offshore floating solar arrays.

In tandem with this idea, a company called Everblue are developing wind-powered boats to ferry power gathered by the solar arrays back to shore."

I can't even park a barge at my dock because its shadow kills the sea grass.

Yeah, Japan can't spare land for big solar farms. They need it all to feed their people. I saw this a few years ago when they were dismantling solar farms, turning the area back into rice growing.

Whatever the reason... they seem to be on the right path.

The Japanese are working in the wrong direction. Their power had a significant nuclear component which has been in decline since Fukishima. Meanwhile, their coal consumption grows.

Methane as a greenhouse gas, and the failure of COP28...

"They can easily be seduced by statistics like methane is responsible for 30 percent of the warming now, which implies that we can get rid of that much warming by aggressively acting on methane. But that ignores how much methane is due to natural sources we can’t control.

It is a mass delusion. Even the IPCC has been very resistant to moving away from this false global warming potential equivalence, which goes back to the very first IPCC report. Myles Allen and I have been fighting this fight with IPCC. Myles is my colleague at Oxford and goes to COP meetings, and he couldn’t even get our improved ways of putting methane valuation on the agenda or mentioned in the reports. The IPCC is a very conservative organization, and because they—and policymakers—have gotten so used to these global warming equivalents, they seem very reluctant to change. It’s very distressing. And reporters have just been completely taken in by the notion that methane is the important thing."

No snow on the ground for Christmas here (NW corner of greater Toronto area). No snow in the 14-day forecast until sometime in January and even then, not much, and no overnight lows below -6 C.

Green Christmases are not unheard of - I've been out on my motorcycle on Christmas Eve a couple years ago and the only reason for not going out on Christmas Day was that I had family stuff to do ... but we had a snowstorm the day after that.

But, no snow on the ground until (maybe, if the forecast holds) 6 January is not normal.

We've got about an inch, where we would normally have more. A couple of years ago is still in the climate change envelope. I suspect this will become more common in future.

Beijing breaks a seven-decade cold-weather record

BEIJING, Dec 24 (Reuters) – China’s capital Beijing has broken its record for hours of sub-zero temperatures in December dating back to 1951, after a cold wave swept swathes of the country and brought blizzards in its wake, sending temperatures towards historic lows.

Northern and northeastern parts of the country have experienced a record-breaking chill since last week, with some areas in the northeast hitting minus 40 Celsius and Fahrenheit and below, as biting cold air flowed down from the Arctic.

As of Sunday, a weather observatory in Beijing had recorded more than 300 hours of below-freezing temperatures since Dec. 11, the most for the month since records began in 1951, according to state-backed Beijing Daily.

The capital has also endured nine consecutive days of temperatures below minus 10 C (14 F) in this period, the Beijing Daily added.

Several cities in the central Chinese province of Henan, southwest of Beijing, are in the grip of a winter heating supply crunch, with thermal power suppliers in the city of Jiaozuo under pressure to ensure suppli
