Nuclear power plants are not designed to operate in war zones. What can be done to proactively shore up the safety systems of these plants in Ukraine?

Assuming Russia permitted the international community to bring equipment on-site uncontested, is there anything that could be used in a pinch to augment emergency power systems etc? When I got out of the nuclear industry in 2016, there were a lot of projects in the works for this type of “beyond design basis” scenario in response to Fukushima.

Hopefully IAEA is already being proactive about this and working in a contingency plan, but I’m interested in hearing thoughts from our community here.

So you think if things really went south at one of these plants, Russia wouldn't ask for help? You may be right, but I'd feel slightly better if we were at least prepared to help, just in case. A few million dollars in preparation now could save trillions.

I do not think there is any conceivable scenario in which Russia asks NATO for help.

They want to either have it or it not produce energy when they have to leave.

Its relatively new and also houses the dry spent fuel plant.

The soviets spent huge resources building it.

They also transitioned to Westinghouse fuel relatively recently. And scrapped plans to build more Russian VVER and use western companies.

If you look what the Soviet economy put into Ukraine before its collapse it was colossal.

And from what I can tell around me a lot of the die hard soviets blame Ukraine for the collapse of the soviet union. Partly Chernobyl and the independence referendum being overwhelming. And they real hate Ukrainians as a people and what they did.

Russia took all the old soviet union debt after the collapse which caused them the default the last time.

Ukraine was left with all the industry and the farming and energy and then had the cheek to move away from Russia.

And they pretty much know now that the west is going to lavish funding to Ukraine after this. Loads of power to the Euro grid. Loads of power for steel production. Best farming soil in Europe. No problems with water.

Crimea with the old TSAR canal was Russia's rice production centre. When the Ukrainians dammed the canal for them not paying for water that stopped and there is nothing much left there apart from a half complete Nuclear power plant since its been annexed and the Crimea locals can see the south coast of Ukraine slowly clawing its way up in the world. They can't even cover the place in solar panels because nobody is interested in buying power from them and its to far away from Russian customers. So Crimea was heading back towards separating again.

The thought of Ukrainians having 6 MWe of energy paid for by Russia and them having better living conditions than Mother Russia makes them boil with fury. They are more than likely trying to figure out a way of permanently putting it out of action without any energy release and leaving the cost of decommissioning to Ukraine to deal with. But they know fine that the sanctions won't be lifted until they do clear up their mess.

So they are basically screwed and know it.

You break the bottles, chairs, mirrors and tables, the judge adds those damages to the disorderly conduct fine and court costs. Hope they're enjoying running up their tab.

Spain's found some nice yachts. Abromovichs' 350M€ Eclipse is here. King Filipe is going to be happy.
It has two armored helicopters and a Missile defense system.

If you put all the Russian super rich yachts together they are more than likely worth more than the whole of the Russian navy. And they will have more fuel on board and engines start.

When the Russians put a big war ship through the English channel its a standing joke that the French and British navy's are shadowing it more in the case its engines fail so they can get a line on it than any hostility's.

Are you saying the Crazy Ivan is an involuntary maneuver?

Personally I think they should two this one out and YouTube it while they see how it defends itself against 10 simultaneous Harpoon strikes.

just had a google for that Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier... That's the one they were always scared was going to spontaneously sink mid transit.

it seems they have had problems again and its not due to be sea worthy again until past 2023 and before this westerns were predicting 2025. After the sanctions thats going to be even longer.

Damaged power lines of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant cannot be repaired due to active hostilities.
As Ukrinform reports, this was reported by the press service of NNEGC Energoatom in a Telegram.

"Thus, only one of the four high-voltage lines remains operational.
As a result, the capacity of the two operating ZNPP units has been reduced. It is currently impossible to repair the line, as active fighting continues in the damaged area," the statement said.

Energoatom reminds that on March 16, 2022, as a result of enemy shelling, the high-voltage transmission line of ZNPP - Kakhovka 750 kV, through which electricity is supplied from the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, was damaged.

As Ukrinform reported, Russian troops captured ZNPP on the night of March 4.

On March 15, Petro Kotin, head of Energoatom, said that there were between 500 and 900 invaders at the Zaporizhzhya NPP.

According to Energoatom, as of March 16, Russian troops continue to detonate shells and mines at the Zaporizhzhya NPP.

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine.
Russian troops are shelling and destroying key infrastructure, massively shelling residential areas of Ukrainian cities and villages using artillery, multiple rocket launchers and ballistic missiles.

More bombs around the Zaporizhzhya NPP, only thing saving it from direct hits is that there are Russians there, a stray can still find it's way.

Not so sure. I never see any news about it, but neither have I hunted for it. It always looks like they're still in cleanup mode, trying to find places to build and store the water in ever more tanks.
